David Reynolds, an American photographer, travels to Colombia with his British fiancée Lauren to persuade David’s teenage daughter Jill to come back to the United States for their wedding. Jill resents the plan, especially after her mother Marcela’s death, and she resists joining the couple. She’s staying with David’s former sister-in-law Gina, a television reporter, and Gina’s cameraman Ramón, who is dating Jill. When David insists that Jill must return, she evasively claims her passport is in a nearby city and quietly invites Ramón to accompany them to retrieve it, much to David’s irritation.
A fierce storm rolls in, and Captain Morales warns them that the flooded roads ahead could be dangerous. Gina brushes off the warning, insisting they press on, arguing she knows the area well. But the weather worsens, the car skids, and the group is swept off the road by a wave. Lauren suffers two broken ribs in the crash, and the stranded group must seek shelter. They reach a remote inn where the owner, Felipe, tells them the place is closed and urges them to go to town for help. His hospitality is offered with a wary caution: they should not leave the lobby.
Inside, Jill and Ramón explore for facilities while Felipe’s suspicions linger. Jill hears a girl calling for help in Spanish, and the two hide when Felipe returns and checks a basement door. When Jill and Ramón descend, they discover Ana Maria, Felipe’s daughter, locked inside a box. Felipe confronts them with a rifle, but David intervenes, knocking Felipe unconscious and freeing Ana Maria. They bind Felipe and debate what to do next. Ana Maria does not speak much, and Felipe warns that they will all die if he regains consciousness.
The group grows suspicious as they notice odd things: the inn has not hosted a guest since 1978, Felipe possesses a decades-old photograph of Ana Maria, and the box bears occult carvings. Ana Maria teases them by saying she will kill everyone. Felipe revives and lunges at Ana Maria, slashing his wrists in a frenzy before charging with a knife. Ramón disarms and shoots Felipe, ending the immediate threat.
Captain Morales arrives on the scene and demands to see Felipe. They explain that Felipe attacked them in self-defense, and Morales orders everyone to enter the box at gunpoint. David briefly slips inside the box, then charges Morales and disarms him. Morales reveals a chilling truth: Ana Marie is a bruja, a witch who can take over the body of anyone who kills her current host. Felipe had imprisoned her for nearly forty years after his daughter’s possession. The witch is adept at learning secrets and sowing discord, driving people to kill one another so she can inhabit the strongest body.
Gina, threatened with exposure of her abortion, kills Ana Maria; Ramón kills Gina when she reveals that he is a serial killer who preys on young women. Morales urges them to wound the witch rather than kill her, but the danger intensifies as Lauren unintentionally kills Ramón, body now harboring the witch. The witch, in Lauren’s form, taunts them by revealing that David turned off Marcela’s life support without telling Jill.
With Lauren brought back to the house, Morales declares there is no cure. The witch frees herself from Lauren, kills Morales, and promises to spare Jill if David sacrifices himself. The witch’s deception continues until David’s resolve falters, and she appears to him as Marcela, disfigured to demand his sacrifice. David initially agrees, but before he can act, Jill takes matters into her own hands and kills the witch. Grief-stricken, David locks Jill—in possession of the witch—inside the box, ending the immediate danger but leaving a haunting, unresolved aftermath.
