What is Justine's job in the movie?

Plot Summary

In the quaint Texas town where she resides with her husband Phil (Phil), Justine Last, a restless thirty-year-old, navigates the humdrum routine of small-town life. Her days are filled with the mundane tasks of working at Retail Rodeo, the local big-box store, alongside Cheryl, Gwen, and security guard Corny, while Phil indulges in his favorite pastime: smoking marijuana with his best friend Bubba.

Justine’s monotonous existence takes a turn when Holden is hired as a cashier at work. The two strike up a conversation, and Justine finds herself confiding in Holden about her feelings of being underappreciated at home. As they spend more time together, Holden becomes smitten with Justine, but his advances are initially rebuffed by her. However, after he pens a cryptic letter threatening to disappear from her life if she doesn’t meet him at the motel that day, Justine’s resolve crumbles, and they embark on an illicit affair.

As Justine’s clandestine relationship with Holden continues to blossom, her marriage to Phil begins to unravel. One fateful night, she discovers Bubba’s truck parked outside a seedy motel, leaving her convinced that he knows about the affair. In a desperate attempt to extricate herself from the toxic situation, Justine confesses all to Holden at work, only to be met with rejection. Meanwhile, Phil’s suspicions are piqued when he catches Bubba in the act of blackmailing Justine into sleeping with him.

The very next day, Holden disappears from work, leaving a trail of chaos and destruction in his wake. His drunken rampage culminates in a confrontation with Justine, where he reveals his true colors as a troubled individual who’s willing to go to great lengths to free her from her marriage. As Justine struggles to break free from the toxic cycle of their relationship, she takes a pregnancy test and is left reeling when it yields an unexpected positive result.

As the truth begins to unravel, Phil is overjoyed at the prospect of becoming a father, but Justine’s uncertainty about the father’s identity hangs precariously in the balance. Meanwhile, Holden’s erratic behavior culminates in a brazen heist at work, with $15,000 going missing under his watchful eye. Justine becomes embroiled in a web of deceit as she’s interrogated by her boss Jack about her relationship with Holden.

As the story reaches its climax, Justine finds herself trapped between her toxic marriage and her tumultuous affair with Holden. With the truth slowly revealing itself, Justine must confront the harsh realities of her situation and make a choice that will forever alter the course of her life.

The following day, Justine carefully prepares a suitcase as she weighs the pros and cons of staying put or making a hasty exit with Holden. Her dilemma is momentarily set aside as she pays a visit to Retail Rodeo, where she discreetly informs her manager about Holden’s whereabouts. Later, while watching a news broadcast, she’s left reeling by the announcement that the police have cordoned off the hotel, resulting in a tense standoff that ultimately ends in tragedy for Holden. The next day, Bubba approaches Justine with a mix of trepidation and pleading, begging her to keep their encounter confidential, as he’s spotted Phil reviewing their motel room expenses on his credit card statement.

When Justine returns home, Phil confronts her about the possibility of an affair, his tone laced with suspicion. When she candidly admits to having been unfaithful, he lashes out in anger, striking her. Later, Phil expresses regret for his violent outburst and demands to know if the baby is indeed his. Justine reassures him that it’s his child, but Phil remains fixated on discovering the identity of her lover. When he asks if she had an affair with Corny, the security guard, Justine hesitates before offering a false alibi.

The next morning at Retail Rodeo, Justine is taken aback by the sight of Corny sporting a visibly bruised face and arm in a sling. Cheryl later breaks the news to her that during Bible study the previous evening, two masked men ambushed Corny. As the film concludes, Justine remains employed at Retail Rodeo. Phil brings their newborn child to her doorstep, where she cradles the infant with a warm maternal instinct. The couple appears content in each other’s company, their love and devotion rekindled as they begin this new chapter in their lives.
