The Intruder 2005

As Scott Howard (Michael Ealy) walks into a surprise party celebrating his promotion, courtesy of his wife Annie (Meagan Good) and their close friends, he is enveloped by a warm atmosphere filled with toasts and congratulations. However, this jubilant moment quickly fades when they discover a stunning home in Napa Valley. Their excitement takes an unsettling turn when they encounter the owner, Charlie Peck (Dennis Quaid), who is in the midst of dealing with a deer wreaking havoc in his garden.

While touring the property, Charlie shares his heartbreaking story about losing his wife Ellen to cancer, revealing his plans to move to Florida with his daughter. The couple is genuinely moved by Charlie’s sincerity, leading them to reconsider and ultimately decide to purchase the house at a bargain. They plan a cozy housewarming gathering with Mike (Joseph Sikora) and his girlfriend Rachel (Alvina August). But as Mike steps outside for a smoke, he quickly becomes uneasy, feeling as though someone is keeping an eye on him from the treeline. The next morning, he discovers a cigarette burn on the upholstery of his car, heightening his discomfort.

While out for ice cream, Annie observes Scott’s flirtatious exchanges with the cashier, sparking her suspicions. Later that night, she confronts Scott, voicing her discomfort over his actions. In an effort to support Charlie after his loss, Annie extends an invitation for Thanksgiving dinner. Charlie arrives, visibly unsettled by a tapestry that was once hung by Ellen, and although he tries to maintain his composure, the tension is thick. During a smoke break with Mike, Charlie’s odd demeanor raises further questions about him.

Not long after, Scott, feeling the weight of growing tension, hires a security firm to boost their home’s defenses, but this only seems to enrage Charlie, who demands the workers halt their activity. Scott responds firmly, stating that he will protect his wife at all costs, even as Charlie tries to dismiss their concerns as nothing more than noisy teenagers.

As Scott’s career flourishes, securing a major client and enjoying time with his colleagues, his relationship with Annie suffers. Charlie opportunistically spends time with her, deepening her doubts about Scott’s whereabouts during his late-night engagements. Clashes between Scott and Annie intensify as secrets are laid bare, and as night falls, suspicion is compounded when Scott rushes outside with a baseball bat only to find a group of terrified high school students.

The following night, their peaceful outing is shattered when Scott confronts Charlie about his behavior towards Annie. When Scott becomes the victim of a hit-and-run, he’s taken to the hospital, where Mike digs up troubling truths about Charlie’s troubled past. It turns out that Charlie, burdened by debts from a failed construction business, was forced to sell his cherished home, and Ellen’s death was shrouded in gruesome suspicion.

Charlie’s visit to Annie, under the guise of concern for Scott, raises alarms. As Mike heads to check on Annie, he is ultimately ambushed by Charlie, wielding an axe with deadly intentions. Meanwhile, Scott attempts to reconnect with Charlie’s estranged daughter, Cassidy, only to find that mentioning Charlie sends her into a panic, revealing the darkness of her father’s history.

Annie becomes increasingly fearful, discovering a concealed entrance leading to Charlie’s hideout beneath their home. Here, she stumbles upon a freezer containing Mike’s lifeless body, an unsettling testament to Charlie’s sinister plans. Meanwhile, Charlie continues his manipulations, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

When Scott returns home, he catches Charlie attempting to overpower Annie. In a desperate bid for survival, she breaks free and reveals the stark reality of the horrors she has uncovered. As Charlie retrieves his rifle, Scott and Annie lock themselves in their bedroom, poised for a desperate stand.

With the air thick with tension, Charlie frantically searches for them while Scott dismisses the moment to act. He finally confronts Charlie, striking him down and claiming the rifle. In a nail-biting climax, Annie calls 911, reporting the intruder shot by her husband. As Charlie desperately clings to life, begging for mercy, it marks the end of his reign of terror as Scott finally takes control of the situation, ensuring their safety once and for all.
