Plot Summary

As the curtain opens on this whimsical tale, the Muppets gather for an intimate film screening that serves as a nostalgic ode to their humble beginnings. In a sun-kissed Florida swamp, Kermit the Frog (Kermit the Frog) lives a peaceful existence, serenading the surroundings with his banjo and soulful rendition of “Rainbow Connection.” His impromptu performance catches the attention of Bernie, a seasoned talent agent who senses untapped potential in the charismatic amphibian. As fate would have it, this chance encounter sparks an idea that will propel Kermit on a life-changing adventure: to follow his dreams and bring joy to millions.

Inspired by the prospect of making people smile, Kermit embarks on a cross-country journey to Tinseltown, armed with little more than a banjo, a heart full of hope, and an open road. Along the way, he meets Fozzie Bear (Fozzie Bear), a hapless stand-up comedian whose comedic timing is as dry as the desert. As they set off in Fozzie’s vintage 1951 Studebaker, their friendship blossoms amidst the open road and endless miles of freedom.

However, not everyone shares Kermit’s enthusiasm for this new path. Doc Hopper (Doc Hopper), a shrewd entrepreneur, and his loyal assistant Max (Max) are hot on Kermit’s heels, determined to convince him to become the face of their struggling French-fried frog legs restaurant franchise. Horrified by the prospect of peddling processed pond life, Kermit refuses Hopper’s advances and hits the road once more with Fozzie in tow.

As they navigate the winding highway, the duo encounters Dr. Teeth (Dr. Teeth) and his Electric Mayhem bandmates, who provide a much-needed pit stop at an old church. With their vehicle camouflaged to avoid unwanted attention, Kermit and Fozzie meet Gonzo (Gonzo) and his lovely companion Camilla the Chicken (Camilla the Chicken), who are equally driven by their own aspirations in Hollywood’s spotlight.

Their travels take them to a bustling used car lot, where they cross paths with the hulking Sweetums. Initially rebuffed, Sweetums eventually reappears, revealing that he had merely been gathering his belongings. The group then converges at a county fair, where Kermit and Miss Piggy (Miss Piggy) share an unmistakable spark.

As their romance blossoms, Hopper and Max resort to nefarious tactics to capture Miss Piggy, using her as bait to lure Kermit into a trap. However, when the dust settles, it’s clear that this is no ordinary abduction. A mad scientist named Professor Krassman (Professor Krassman) attempts to brainwash Kermit into peddling Hopper’s products, but Miss Piggy intervenes with a show of force, turning the tables on her captors and inadvertently freeing Kermit.

In a stunning turn of events, Miss Piggy receives an offer she can’t refuse and abandons Kermit, leaving him heartbroken and bewildered. As the curtain closes on this opening act, the Muppets’ journey has only just begun, filled with twists, turns, and the promise of adventure in the City of Angels.

As the Muppets’ arduous journey to Hollywood continues, they’re joined by their old friend Rowlf the Dog and reunite with Miss Piggy along the way. However, their car suddenly breaks down in the middle of the desert, leaving them stranded and forced to confront the harsh reality that they might miss their audition the very next day. Kermit, weighed down by regret and shame, takes a momentary stroll away from the campfire, only to return with renewed determination and a deeper understanding of his role as leader.

The group’s fortunes take a turn for the better when the Electric Mayhem arrives on the scene, having learned of their predicament by reading ahead in the script. The Mayhem offers to drive the entire troupe to their destination in their trusty bus, providing a much-needed lifeline in their time of need.

As they near their destination, Kermit is warned by reformed Max that Hopper has hired a ruthless assassin, Snake Walker, to take out the Muppet leader. Undaunted, Kermit decides to face his aggressor head-on and proposes a showdown in a nearby ghost town. There, they stumble upon the eccentric inventor Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and his loyal assistant Beaker.

In a bold move, Kermit confronts Hopper with an impassioned appeal to his own hopes and dreams, but the latter remains unmoved and orders his henchmen to eliminate Kermit and his friends. Just as all hope seems lost, one of Dr. Honeydew’s inventions, “insta-grow” pills, temporarily enlarge Mayhem drummer Animal, sending Hopper and his goons fleeing in terror. Max, ever the loyal friend, cheers on the Muppets as they emerge victorious.

Finally, after navigating a series of obstacles and setbacks, the Muppets arrive at the Hollywood studio and meet with studio executive Lew Lord, who signs them to a “standard rich and famous” contract. However, their first take on the script is marred by chaos when Gonzo careens into the prop rainbow, triggering an explosion that blows a hole in the roof of the studio. Amidst the chaos, a rainbow shines through the hole, illuminating the Muppets as they join forces with characters from other Henson productions, including Sesame Street, Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas, and The Land of Gorch.

In a fitting climax to their journey, the Muppets come together to sing a reprise of “Rainbow Connection,” their voices blending in perfect harmony as the film draws to a close.
