Plot Summary

As Leah (Sanaa Lathan) begins her day, she’s already running behind schedule, rushing to get dressed for work while her boyfriend Dave (Morris Chestnut) slumbers peacefully in bed. Despite being late, she still takes the time to remind him of their evening plans - a party celebrating their friends’ wedding anniversary. The morning’s events set the tone for what will become an increasingly tumultuous day.

As Leah waits in line at the coffee shop, her eyes lock with a handsome stranger further down the counter. The spark of attraction is palpable as they exchange knowing glances. When the barista hands him his iced coffee, Leah’s attempt to grab it simultaneously sparks a flustered reaction from both parties. In a moment of embarrassment, she hastily departs, leaving the cup behind.

That night at the party, Leah notices the subtle dynamics between Dave and their friend’s son, which only serves as a precursor to the marital tensions that will soon come to a head. Back home, a candid conversation about their future plans leaves Leah disheartened by Dave’s reluctance to commit. The disagreement ultimately leads to a heartbreaking rift between them.

As Leah throws herself into her work as a coping mechanism, she finds solace in the familiar routine. However, her chance encounter with Carter Duncan (Michael Ely) at dinner only serves to rekindle the spark that was lit earlier that morning. When Karen’s last-minute cancellation prompts Leah to wait alone at the bar, Carter’s timely intervention saves her from an unwanted suitor.

The evening takes a romantic turn as Leah and Carter grow more comfortable in each other’s presence over dinner. Their connection is undeniable, and it culminates in a passionate kiss that leaves them both breathless. As they part ways, Carter presents her with his card, leaving Leah to wonder if this chance encounter might be the start of something more meaningful.

The next morning at the office, Carter’s phone call to Leah comes out of the blue, leaving her both astonished and intrigued by his ability to track her down. As an IT specialist, he effortlessly reminds her of his technical prowess, and their conversation flows effortlessly into a sultry Reggae club encounter that culminates in a steamy tryst in the restroom. The following night, Leah’s carelessness with her keys leads her to retrieve the spare from its cleverly disguised hiding spot in her yard. Her neighbor, Mrs. McCarthy (Tess Harper), happens upon the scene, and Leah introduces Carter as her new beau.

As their relationship blossoms, Leah invites Carter to join her family for a weekend getaway in San Francisco. There, he forms a strong bond with her parents by taking her father (Charles Dutton) on a nostalgic baseball game outing. Her mother’s insistence that they sleep in separate rooms only fuels Leah’s desire to defy the rules and sneak into Carter’s bed. Though rebuffed, Carter’s gentle refusal earns him even more brownie points with Leah.

Upon their return from San Francisco, Carter declares his undying love to Leah. During a pit stop at a gas station, a stranger catches Leah’s eye with his compliment on Carter’s sleek Dodge Charger. Carter, however, misinterprets the man’s intentions and, fueled by jealousy, bursts out of the store to confront him. The ensuing brawl leaves the unfortunate soul battered and bruised, while Leah frantically tries to intervene. As they flee the scene at gunpoint, Carter berates her for not standing up for him, prompting Leah to assert her need for space.

In the aftermath, Leah meets Carter for dinner, only to announce that their relationship has reached its expiration date. Carter’s subsequent apologies fall on deaf ears, and he becomes increasingly agitated as she refuses his overtures. Over the next few weeks, Carter’s obsession with Leah reaches new heights as he relentlessly stalks her at work and in her home, bombarding her with non-stop phone calls despite her best efforts to evade him.

Leah eventually decides to seek counsel from Detective Hansen (Holt McCallany), who advises her to meticulously document all future attempts by Carter to contact her. Hansen’s intuition suggests that something is amiss with Carter, prompting him to order a detective to pull his file and uncover any underlying issues that may be driving his erratic behavior.

As Leah departs from her office one evening, she is met with a jarring discovery: a crimson rose and a cryptic note that sends shivers down her spine. The ominous message reads, “If I can’t have you, no one will.” The next morning, Carter receives a restraining order at his workplace, followed by the devastating news of his termination.

In a subsequent phone call from Dave, he expresses his desire to rekindle their relationship, and Leah’s heart is filled with hope as they meet in person. However, she shares her concerns about Carter with Dave, revealing the dark reality that has unfolded. As they sit down for dinner at a local eatery, Leah’s eyes scan the room, only to spot Carter lurking in the shadows. Dave’s instincts kick in, and he confronts Carter, warning him to cease all contact with Leah.

The authorities are once again notified of Carter’s violation of the restraining order, leading Hansen to apprehend him and bring him into the station. As Carter spins a web of deceit, claiming that the restaurant is a public place and that Dave had threatened him, Hansen’s patience wears thin. A stern warning is issued, and Carter is left with a healthy dose of caution.

Meanwhile, Leah’s neighbor, Mrs. McCarthy, stumbles upon an unsettling scene: Carter installing cameras within Leah’s home. Her inquiry about his presence is met with a fabricated excuse, but Mrs. McCarthy senses something amiss. As Carter approaches her menacingly, she flees back to the safety of her own residence, only to be pursued by the relentless Carter. A desperate struggle ensues, culminating in Carter’s brutal murder of Mrs. McCarthy, as he pushes her down the stairs, causing a fatal injury.

The discovery of Mrs. McCarthy’s lifeless body sends shockwaves through Leah’s world, leaving her visibly shaken when she learns of the tragedy. As the days pass, Leah’s private life becomes a public spectacle, with an anonymous sender dispatching a compromising video of her and Dave to their colleagues and business associates via email.

In the midst of this chaos, Carter continues to monitor Leah’s every move from the shadows, his cameras capturing intimate moments between her and Dave. The revelation of these disturbing images serves as a stark reminder that Carter’s malevolent presence still lurks, waiting to strike once more.

As the morning sun creeps over the horizon, Leah tenderly presents Dave (actor’s name) with a thoughtful birthday gift, a watch bearing the poignant inscription “I will always love you.” The sentimental token is engraved with her heartfelt sentiments, and Dave’s response is a solemn vow to never remove it from his wrist. The next day, as Dave travels to Santa Barbara for a crucial business meeting, an unseen force of malice sets in motion a devastating sequence of events.

Carter, a mastermind of malevolence, quietly sabotages David’s car by loosening the lug nuts, rendering it vulnerable to catastrophic failure. As Dave navigates the winding hills, the wheels begin to lose traction, and the vehicle careens out of control down a treacherous slope. The crash is brutal, leaving Dave seriously injured and struggling for life.

Carter, ever the calculating predator, lurks in the shadows, waiting for his moment to strike. He descends upon the wreckage, extinguishing David’s last breath with calculated cruelty, then coldly pilfers the watch from the victim’s wrist. Meanwhile, Leah is consumed by anxiety as she frantically tries to reach Dave, only to fall asleep, exhausted and worried.

The cruel reality of Dave’s fate is delivered to Leah by Hansen (actor’s name) and another detective, who arrive at her doorstep with solemn faces. Her world crumbles as she collapses into Hansen’s arms, the weight of loss crushing her.

As the days pass, Leah finds herself ensnared in a web of despair, haunted by the specter of Carter’s evil machinations. Though Hansen assures her that there is no concrete evidence linking Carter to the crime, Leah remains convinced of his involvement. Her determination to uncover the truth only intensifies when she learns that Carter’s real name is not his own and that he has a history of harassment dating back to his troubled past in foster care.

As Hansen shares this revelation with her over coffee, Leah seethes with anger, feeling betrayed by the lack of transparency. Her fury fuels her resolve to take matters into her own hands. She begins to prepare for the possibility of self-defense, purchasing a shotgun and loading it with a warning shot, a potent reminder that she will not be silenced or intimidated.

Leah’s encounter with Carter at his new workplace is a tense confrontation, as she warns his new lover about the monster lurking beneath his charming façade. Carter’s latest victim flees in terror, while Leah secures yet another restraining order and personally delivers it to her tormentor’s doorstep, ensuring his downfall and ultimate disempowerment. As Carter departs his office, he kicks a trash can in impotent rage, foreshadowing the devastating consequences of underestimating Leah’s unwavering determination for justice.

As she tracks her quarry, a determined female investigator finds herself at the doorstep of his apartment, where she employs a crowbar to gain unauthorized access. Inside, she’s met with a familiar yet jarring sight: her own feline companion lounging among an array of computer monitors, now rendered inoperable by her own hand. Frustrated and unable to decipher the password, she unleashes a primal fury upon the equipment, reducing it to smoldering wreckage and leaving the apartment in disarray. The walls bear testament to her wrath, with the defiant message “Not good enough bring it bitch” scrawled in bold spray paint.

That same night, Carter (character A) decides to take matters into his own hands, infiltrating Leah’s home under the cover of darkness. He’s drawn to the sound of running water and cautiously enters the bathroom, shrouded in steam. As he attempts to peer into the shower stall, Leah (character B) springs into action, her shotgun cocked behind him. Carter hesitates mere moments before successfully wresting the weapon from her grasp, setting off a chain reaction of violence as they clash throughout the house.

The combatants engage in a brutal game of cat and mouse, with Leah momentarily gaining the upper hand by sending Carter crashing down the stairs. However, he refuses to yield, and the fight spills into the kitchen where Leah seizes a knife, scoring a glancing blow before Carter gains control once more. As she struggles to regain her footing, Leah resorts to using pots from the stove to temporarily incapacitate him. Seizing the opportunity, she reclaims the shotgun and fires beanbag rounds in an attempt to subdue her adversary.

When Carter continues to advance, undeterred by the mild warnings, Leah is forced to up the ante, firing a live shell that proves fatal. The resulting impact sends Carter’s lifeless body crashing back, shattering the glass coffee table into shards. A battered and bloodied Leah then presents herself at the local police department, requesting an audience with Hansen (character C). With an air of quiet resignation, she lays the shotgun on his desk, stating matter-of-factly, “I’d like to report an intruder.” The final scene unfolds as police personnel carefully remove Carter’s lifeless form from Leah’s ravaged home.
