The narrative unfolds within the Jewish community of Algeria during the vibrant 1920s. It begins when a rabbi discovers that his chatty parrot, known for its incessant talking, has fallen prey to his cat. Remarkably, the cat acquires the ability to speak human language, but soon reveals itself to be quite rude and arrogant. In an effort to reform the outspoken feline, the rabbi introduces him to the teachings of the Torah. The cat, convinced of its newfound identity as a Jewish creature, believes it deserves a bar mitzvah. This leads the duo to seek the guidance of the rabbi’s own mentor.

As their relationship develops, the cat’s mocking attitude causes friction, culminating in the rabbi’s furious declaration that the cat should face death for its heresy. Frustrated, the rabbi decides to take his cat and part ways, angered by how the cat has ridiculed his authority. However, they eventually strike a compromise: the rabbi will educate the cat about the Torah, and if deemed worthy, the cat may have its own bar mitzvah.

In the course of their educational journey, the cat plays an unexpected role in helping the rabbi successfully complete a French language exam with hopes of someday becoming the head rabbi. Alas, just after the exam, the cat mysteriously loses its speaking ability, having invoked God’s name during a prayer for its master. But fortune favors the pair when they encounter a Russian Jew who has concealed himself among a shipment of religious texts. To the cat’s surprise, he discovers he can articulate in Russian and later, remarkably regains his capacity to speak French, proving his prowess as a translator.

This encounter leads to a fascinating twist: the Russian reveals his identity as a painter who has fled from Soviet Russia. He arrives in Africa with a compelling quest to locate a mythical city of black Jews hidden deep in the continent. Impassioned by this vision, he persuades the rabbi, his clever cat, and a former Russian soldier to assist him in this exhilarating search, forging an extraordinary bond among them as they embark on a new adventure.
