Plot Summary

On a sweltering August morning in 1973, a macabre thief embarks on a grave robbing spree in Muerto County, Texas, leaving behind a gruesome tableau of rotting flesh and skeletal remains. Meanwhile, five friends - Sally Hardesty (character), Jerry, Pam, Kirk, and Franklin, her handicapped brother - embark on a road trip in their van, their minds preoccupied with the past as they navigate the dusty highways.

Their journey takes them to the family cemetery, where they pay respects to the grave of their grandfather. The group’s somber mood is interrupted by Franklin’s nostalgic tales of the Hardesty family’s history with animal slaughter, which sparks a morbid fascination in their hitchhiking companion. As tensions rise, the stranger attacks Franklin and vandalizes the van with a gruesome symbol, sending the friends reeling.

Low on fuel, they stop at a desolate gas station, only to be met with empty tanks. The group’s exploration of an abandoned Hardesty family estate yields little respite from their woes. As Kirk and Pam venture off to find solace in a nearby swimming hole, they stumble upon another dilapidated house, its generators humming away like the macabre heartbeat of the property.

Kirk’s ill-fated decision to enter the house sets off a chain reaction of horrors. A monstrous figure, shrouded in a grotesque skin mask, emerges from the shadows, wielding a hammer that will soon claim Kirk’s life. When Pam enters the scene, she finds herself face-to-face with a chamber of horrors, where human and animal bones are strewn about like macabre decorations. The masked killer impales her on a meat hook and sets in motion a ghastly dismemberment ritual, all while Kirk’s mangled corpse lies nearby.

As night descends, Jerry searches frantically for his missing friends, only to stumble upon Pam’s lifeless body, frozen in a chest freezer like some sort of macabre sculpture. The masked man, still lurking in the shadows, delivers a crushing blow with his hammer, silencing Jerry’s screams forever.

As the darkness envelops them, Sally (no actress provided) and Franklin embark on a fateful journey towards the other house, their footsteps echoing through the night. However, their tranquility is short-lived, as they are ambushed by the masked man, who unleashes his chainsaw with deadly precision, silencing Franklin forever. The relentless pursuer chases Sally into the abandoned dwelling, where she stumbles upon a decrepit scene: an ancient, seemingly lifeless old man and a woman’s cadaverous remains. The masked figure continues to stalk her, only to vanish as suddenly as he appeared. Seeking solace, Sally finds herself at the local gas station, where the proprietor offers her a moment of compassion before revealing his true nature – a brutal and sadistic individual who beats and subdues her, loading her into his pickup truck with callous disregard. The proprietor’s malevolent intentions are further revealed as he drives to the other house, accompanied by an eerie hitchhiker, later identified as the grave robber. Upon arrival, they enter the dilapidated abode, only to be confronted by the masked man, now dressed in a macabre costume of women’s clothing. The proprietor identifies him and the hitchhiker as brothers, with the latter referring to his sibling as “Leatherface.” As they awaken Grandpa from his apparent death, Sally is subjected to further terror: her finger is sliced open, allowing the decrepit old man to succumb to his bloodlust. Her world descending into chaos, Sally faints.

The following morning, Sally regains consciousness, only to find herself at the mercy of her captors. The brothers engage in a grotesque dance of brutality, intent on bludgeoning her with a hammer. Grandpa, though weak, is initially included in their gruesome game, but his feeble grip ultimately leads to his failure to wield the tool effectively. Sally seizes the opportunity to break free and flee onto the nearby road, pursued by her tormentors. Fate intervenes as an oncoming truck accidentally runs over the hitchhiker, claiming his life. The driver, enraged, attacks Leatherface with a large wrench, leaving him injured before making his escape on foot. As Sally, now drenched in blood, flags down a passing pickup truck and scrambles into its bed, she narrowly escapes Leatherface’s clutches. With the sun rising over the desolate landscape, Sally bursts into laughter, her earlier trauma giving way to a macabre sense of liberation. Meanwhile, Leatherface, his frustration palpable, brandishes his chainsaw in futile defiance as the day begins anew.
