Plot Summary

In the midst of a desperate quest for redemption, Irena (character name), a Ukrainian sex worker with a troubled past, sets her sights on securing employment in an upscale Italian apartment complex. Her initial efforts are focused on scrubbing the stairs to gain favor with the building’s residents, ultimately earning their trust and paving the way for her ultimate goal: to infiltrate the household of a wealthy family and potentially find solace among its members. As she navigates this new environment, Irena forms a strong bond with Gina (character name), the devoted nanny responsible for caring for the family’s young daughter, Thea. Following an unfortunate accident that leaves Gina crippled, Irena seizes the opportunity to fill the vacant role and, through a series of flashbacks, it becomes evident that her past has been marked by unspeakable physical and emotional abuse, as well as the forced surrender of nine children born into her tumultuous existence. With a burning desire to reconnect with one of these long-lost offspring, Irena sets out on a perilous journey to locate her youngest child, whom she believes is none other than Thea herself. As the adoption records hidden within the apartment complex’s walls confirm her suspicions, Irena’s connection to the family deepens, but so too does the mother’s growing unease with Irena’s presence. Ultimately, it is this very concern that leads to the mother’s untimely demise in a car accident orchestrated by Irena’s ruthless pimp (character name), who had been tracking her relentlessly and exacting revenge for her betrayal. As the cycle of violence continues to unfold, Irena finds herself entangled in a web of deceit and deception, forced to confront the dark forces that have haunted her throughout her life. With her pimp ultimately meeting his demise at the hands of his own recklessness, Irena is left to face the consequences of her actions, including a stint behind bars and the shattering revelation that Thea is not, in fact, her daughter after all. Upon her release from prison, Irena is met with an unexpected surprise: the young woman she had long believed to be her child has grown into a beautiful young lady, patiently waiting for her mother’s return.
