Plot Summary

The tale begins in the verdant outskirts of Ard Carraigh, Kaedwen’s capital, where Geralt’s mentor and fellow witcher Vesemir (character name omitted) rescues a noble child from the clutches of a Lechen. As the beast succumbs to its mortal wounds, it utters an ancient and forgotten phrase to Vesemir, setting in motion a chain of events that will unravel the very fabric of their world. The narrative then shifts back in time, delving into Vesemir’s formative years as a young apprentice to the witcher Deglan.

During this era, Vesemir and his closest friend Illyana worked as humble hands for a noble household whose mistress had fallen prey to madness. It was Deglan who astutely deduced that the woman was possessed by a malevolent Mahr, and it was Vesemir’s fledgling skills that proved instrumental in the witcher’s successful exorcism of the monster. As a token of his appreciation, Deglan bequeathed a portion of his payment to the young Vesemir, accompanied by an enigmatic invitation to join their ranks.

Vesemir’s decision to accept this call led him to the revered stronghold of Kaer Morhen, where he underwent a grueling regimen of physical and mental discipline. Years of unyielding dedication transformed him into a formidable witcher, renowned for his unwavering prowess with a blade and his confident swagger.

In the present, Vesemir is confronted by Filvandrel, an Elf of noble birth, who imparts to him the significance of the Lechen’s dying words. These ancient utterances have imbued the forest with a powerful and forbidden spell, one that few dare speak aloud for fear of its consequences. Meanwhile, Tetra Gilcrest, a cunning Sorceress of the Kaedwen Court, endeavors to sway the King against the witchers of Kaer Morhen, viewing them as an abomination.

However, her words fall on deaf ears due to the unwavering dedication of Lady Zerbst, who champions the cause of these misunderstood hunters. Vesemir returns to Kaer Morhen, where he is tasked with overseeing the training of a new generation of witchers, including Geralt (character name omitted), Coën, Lambert, and Ezekiel.

A series of events unfolds as Vesemir and his fellow Witcher, Luca, find themselves embroiled in a fight that culminates in their arrest for killing two Knights who had provoked them. Tetra Gilcrest seizes upon this opportunity to implore the King to execute the imprisoned witchers, but Lady Zerbst’s persuasive efforts ultimately persuade the monarch to dispatch Vesemir and Tetra to the forest to dispel the curse.

As they venture into the heart of darkness, Vesemir and Tetra cross paths with Kitsu, a mysterious hybrid humanoid, who sends a Basilisk to confront them. Undaunted, Vesemir proves himself a formidable opponent, vanquishing the beast but failing to apprehend Kitsu as she flees deeper into the forest.

Their pursuit of Kitsu leads the pair to an ancient and abandoned Elven school, where they stumble upon the gruesome remains of numerous female elves. It is here that they rescue Filvandrel, who departs with a young hybrid girl, vowing that if she ever poses a threat to anyone, he will summon Vesemir’s sword.

As Vesemir (Vesemir) uncovers the unsettling truth about the genetically engineered beasts, he sets out to confront his mentor and master, Witcher Deglan. The revelation that these monstrosities were created by Deglan himself, aimed at revitalizing the dwindling supply of monsters for the Witchers’ work, only serves as a catalyst for Vesemir’s impending reckoning.

However, before tensions can escalate further, Kaer Morhen is besieged by an onslaught of townsfolk from Ard Carraigh and monstrous entities from the Marsh, all under the command of Tetra. This sudden turn of events sees Lady Zerbst, revealed to be Illyana in her youth, escorting the children of Kaer Morhen to safety as the Witchers valiantly defend their stronghold.

Though they put up a fierce fight, the sheer numbers of monsters and humans ultimately prove too great for the Witchers, leading to a devastating massacre. Deglan, realizing the futility of his actions, tries to hold off the onslaught while Vesemir faces Tetra, who has taken the Mages hostage in the basement of Kaer Morhen.

As Vesemir confronts Tetra, he is suddenly plunged into an illusion created by Kitsu, where he finds himself married to Illyana with a child. However, Vesemir’s keen instincts allow him to see through this deception and brutally dispatch Kitsu.

Tetra then launches a surprise attack on Vesemir from behind, revealing her deep-seated hatred for Witchers, stemming from witnessing a brutal murder of her mother at the hands of one when she was younger. Just as Tetra is about to deliver the final blow, Deglan intervenes, striking her down before succumbing to his own mortal wounds.

In his dying moments, Deglan implores Vesemir to find the children and mold them into “better men.” With Illyana’s passing, Vesemir sets out to reunite with the young boys, presenting them with their Witcher medallions. Geralt (Geralt) solemnly remarks that everyone hates them, to which Vesemir responds with a knowing smile: “There will always be more monsters, Geralt.”

As the boys deliberate Vesemir’s words, they ultimately choose to don their medallions and embark on the perilous path of Witchers, forever bound to a world where monsters lurk in every shadow.
