Plot Summary

In the scorching summer of 1960, Richard Hudson traded in his San Francisco roots for the sun-kissed streets of Los Angeles, bringing with him a wealth of experience as a shrewd car dealer. As he set up shop in the city, he began to feel an itch he couldn’t scratch - a creative restlessness that drove him to abandon his lot and take up a new passion: filmmaking. With his first script, The Man Who Got Away, Richard poured his heart and soul into telling the gritty story of a truck driver who loses control, runs down an innocent child, and meets a tragic end in a hail of bullets as he takes on an entire platoon of police officers.

As Richard delved deeper into his creative vision, he found an unlikely collaborator in his father-in-law, Leo - a former film director whose once-bright career had faded like the colors of his prized possession: a Rouault painting of a clown. Together, they pitched their unconventional project to The Man, the enigmatic head honcho at Mammoth Pictures who greenlit the film against all odds. However, Richard’s unwavering commitment to his artistic vision clashed with The Man’s more commercial concerns, setting the stage for a battle of wills.

As tensions mounted, Richard’s personal life became increasingly entangled in the drama. His mother, a former ballerina whose own creative spark had long since fizzled out, coaxed him into a series of awkward and hilarious dance routines that bordered on farce. Meanwhile, his sexually curious stepsister Becky exploited her brother’s vulnerability, leading to a tantalizing game of cat and mouse. And then there was Laura, Richard’s loyal secretary who found herself pregnant with the father’s child - an event he greeted with all the tenderness of a sledgehammer blow.
