Plot Summary

Nick Wilkins, a self-styled couch potato and connoisseur of indulgence, unexpectedly finds himself juggling the responsibilities of caring for his elderly mother while managing the family’s landscaping business in collaboration with his beleaguered colleague, Luis. Despite health hindrances preventing his mother from attending, Nick sets his sights on crashing the extravagant Christmas celebration hosted by his younger brother, Cody. This lavish affair is sure to be as grand as it is superficial. Cody is married to the meticulous and wealthy Sophie, a pharmaceutical sales representative known for her need for control. Together, they reside in an opulent estate with their children: Valerie, an aspiring model and rebellious college student, and Marcus, a gaming fanatic more comfortable in his virtual universe than the real one.

Upon Nick’s arrival, he faces the scorn of Cody and Sophie, who disapprove of his penchant for alcohol and smoking. Nevertheless, a compromise is struck when Nick agrees to limit his vices to Cody’s t-shirt design studio. Here, he finds a temporary refuge where he can secretly smoke and drink alongside Valerie, a like-minded individual who reciprocates his attraction. As the evening unfolds, Nick strikes up a spirited conversation with Marcus, both bonding over their shared contempt for Cody and swapping life stories.

However, Nick is frequently interrupted by bittersweet memories of Emily, his late girlfriend, whose tragic absence continually haunts him. As he and Valerie attempt to reconnect, she teasingly urges him to send her an explicit photo. Unfortunately, Nick’s efforts at digital intimacy are hindered by poor internet connection.

Things take a turn for the worse when Michelle, Nick’s sister, makes an entrance with her husband Kevin, an ardent Cleveland Indians fan who hosts a popular podcast. The group engages in a raucous karaoke session that devolves into disorder when Marcus recounts a wild tale of his eggnog escapades. Sophie’s attempts to impose order are met with rebellious resistance from her stepchildren and husband.

As the night drags on, the tension escalates, particularly during dinner when Nick is confronted with the excruciating memory of Emily’s death. During this emotionally charged moment, Sophie approaches Nick, extending a sympathetic ear in a bid to alleviate his sorrow. As frustrations mount, particularly after a crushing defeat in the white elephant gift exchange, Nick unleashes his frustrations on Cody and Sophie. Fortunately, Michelle intervenes, gently guiding her brother to reconsider his actions and urging him to sober up. Heeding her advice, Nick retreats to his car, where he finds Valerie joining him for a moment of solitude. Yet, instead of succumbing to temptation, Nick chooses to regain his composure by returning to the studio.

The respite is fleeting, as Nick is soon rattled by an upsetting phone call from Luis, who abruptly hangs up after criticizing Nick’s leadership style. As the festivities continue, Nick’s already fragile state of mind is further upset when he discovers a compromising situation between Cody and Valerie in the studio. This shocking revelation triggers a cascade of events that leads Nick to confront both Cody and Valerie, ultimately unearthing their longstanding affair to the entire family.

The aftermath is tumultuous, with Marcus delivering a beating to Cody before Michelle and Kevin drag him away. On Christmas morning, Nick finds himself alone, grappling with the weight of the night’s events. Yet, Sophie stays by his side, offering words of compassion and understanding, forging a bond through their shared tribulations.

In the wake of these dramatic revelations, Michelle and Kevin reminisce over cherished family photos, reflective of happier times. Meanwhile, Valerie is left shattered by her experience, her relationship with Cody reduced to bitter exchanges. Thankfully, Luis finds a semblance of redemption by rejoining the Wilkins’ landscaping business alongside Marcus, who has become his new co-worker. Similarly, Nick discovers a fresh path forward by participating in Kevin’s podcast, sharing stories of the notorious Ten Cent Beer Night.

As he contemplates the turbulent events, Nick reflects on how his parents had their first kiss at the same game that provided a backdrop to the chaos throughout the film. This irony is not lost on him; just as his parents’ love flourished amidst turmoil, it seems Nick’s story is on the cusp of an unforeseen and intriguing chapter.
