As marine researcher Sophia Assalas and her team embark on an adventure near the Great Pacific garbage patch, they are on a mission to find Lilith, a tagged shortfin mako shark. With Chris, Sophia’s husband, leading the dive team that includes Sam, Juan, and Tom, their expedition promises to be thrilling. Meanwhile, Sophia and Jade stay aboard, observing the remarkable events below the surface. What starts as a captivating observation of mako sharks hunting in packs soon escalates into a shocking confrontation.
Upon successfully locating Lilith, they quickly discover that she has grown considerably since her initial tagging. When Chris attempts to collect a blood sample, he is met with fierce resistance, leading to a heart-wrenching tragedy as Lilith viciously dispatches Chris, Sam, Juan, and Tom. This gruesome loss profoundly impacts Sophia, who is left to grapple with the aftermath.
Years later, seeking solace, Sophia works at an aquarium in Paris, only to find herself embroiled in a new odyssey of intrigue. Mika, an environmentalist, brings unsettling news: Lilith’s tracking beacon remains active, having traveled from the Pacific Ocean to the River Seine, becoming ensnared in the city’s waterways. The situation intensifies when a body is discovered, marked by shark bites, prompting police diver Adil to enlist Sophia’s help in tracking down and neutralizing the shark. Yet, complications arise as Mika and her partner Ben choose to disable the beacon, hoping to rescue Lilith instead. Meanwhile, city officials refuse to halt the impending triathlon, viewing it as crucial for enhancing global visibility in the lead-up to the Olympic Games.
As more people become aware of Lilith’s perilous existence, Mika spearheads an effort with supporters to search for her in Paris’s catacombs. Following a revealing conversation, Sophia decides to join Adil’s team after they manage to reactivate Lilith’s beacon. With urgency surrounding their mission, Sophia embarks on a treacherous descent into the depths to uncover the truth about Lilith’s unexpected presence in Paris.
When Mika draws Lilith towards her with a pulsing beacon in a calm reservoir, she unwaveringly enters the water, trusting the predatory shark. This act of faith is met with a horrific outcome as Lilith attacks, resulting in the tragic loss of lives, including those of Ben and Léopold, a police officer alongside Adil. In the aftermath, Sophia and Adil are left to witness the devastation, discovering that a juvenile shark has undergone a shocking transformation, now thriving in fresh water and pregnant through parthenogenesis. This alarming development raises the possibility of more mutated offspring if left unchecked.
As the Mayor steers clear of accountability and obstinately opts to proceed with the triathlon, Sophia and Adil devise a daring plan to lure Lilith out of her lair. They intend to eliminate her with the aid of explosives experts Poiccard and Berruti. As the event kicks off and swimmers take to the water, Adil’s team, including Caro, Adama, Angèle, and Markus, prepares their trap. However, they are unprepared for the appearance of a massive school of juvenile sharks, leading to fatal consequences for Poiccard, Berruti, and Adama before Adil detonates explosives in a desperate bid to destroy the threat.
As chaos ensues, Lilith capsizes the police boat, claiming more lives and violently making her way toward the triathlon. The Mayor and bystanders watch in horror as tragedy unfolds in the water. In a misguided attempt to subjugate the threat, military forces engage, triggering a sequence of underwater explosions and resulting in pandemonium. The explosive reactions send the Mayor, Angèle, and others tumbling into the river, drowning the heart of Paris in chaos while Sophia and Adil find themselves stranded on a rooftop amid the flood.
In a chilling denouement, the film reveals that Lilith’s offspring have spread quietly throughout the world, infiltrating major cities including Paris, London, New York, Bangkok, Venice, and Tokyo. The once comforting notion of global solidarity gives way to an unsettling reality, as Sophia’s darkest fears materialize. It becomes apparent that Lilith’s malevolent progeny may already have colonized humanity’s future, casting a long shadow over civilization.
