As the Evanston Hill High School students board the bus for their field trip under the watchful eye of Mr. Lorenzo (played by...), the atmosphere is alive with chatter and laughter. Ever, a quiet and self-effacing student, takes her seat alongside best friend Tamra, surrounded by an eclectic mix of classmates including Randall and Steven, two introverted loners who secretly harbor crushes on their peer; Danny, a charismatic athlete; Hunt, his trusted sidekick; Jacey, Danny's girlfriend; the overweight but endearing Ryan; and Candice, a bespectacled bookworm. The tranquility is short-lived, as a sudden burst of crimson on the windshield prompts driver Wayne to lose control, sending the bus careening into a forest. A jarring emergency broadcast warning of a nearby chemical attack only adds to the chaos.

As pandemonium erupts, Ever, Tamra, Randall, Steven, Danny, Hunt, and Jacey flee into the woods, seeking refuge in an abandoned building. Ryan joins them later, while back on the bus, Chip, a gruesome figure with all the hallmarks of a mutated zombie, descends upon Mr. Lorenzo with savage ferocity. The ensuing mayhem allows Ever, Tamra, Randall, Steven, Danny, Hunt, and Jacey to escape into the woods, where they regroup in an eerie silence.

As they gather their wits, Ryan arrives, bringing news of Candice's dire situation on the bus. However, the group's attempts at rescue are rebuffed by their peers, who deem the risk too great, allowing Chip to claim another victim. Meanwhile, Wayne, seemingly transformed into a zombie akin to Chip, attacks the students in their sanctuary. Amidst the bedlam, classmates-turned-zombies capture Hunt, leaving Ever, Tamra, Randall, Steven, Danny, Jacey, and Ryan to regroup in a dimly lit room where they discover unsettling mannequins dressed in their likenesses - a grim reminder that someone has specifically targeted each of them.

Just as all hope seems lost, Wayne launches another attack, only to be felled by Randall's valor. As the dust settles, Danny begins to mutate after being impaled during the chaos, his transformation culminating in a shocking display of strength and agility as he contorts and sprints away from the group, leaving everyone stunned and bewildered.

As Ever's frustration with Tamra's neglect of their friendship comes to a head, they part ways after a heated argument over Tamra's decision to align herself with the school's social elite. Meanwhile, Ever and Steven return to the bus to search for a phone, only to be captivated by the eerie sounds emanating from the radio, which reveals that the emergency broadcast was actually a pre-recorded message. It is here that Steven takes advantage of Ever's momentary distraction to administer a tranquilizer via syringe, rendering them unconscious. As Ever's world begins to fade away, they are treated to a fleeting flashback that exposes the sinister plot hatched by Randall and Steven weeks earlier. Inspired by the notorious "Scared Straight!" program, these two individuals concocted a scheme to stage a zombie attack, hoping to exact revenge on their tormentors while presenting themselves as heroes in the eyes of Tamra and Ever.

In the present, Randall returns to the bus, where he lies to Tamra about Ever's demise at the hands of zombies. Unbeknownst to her, Steven has been secretly administering Chip's potent drug to the captive students, including Danny and Hunt. As Ever struggles to regain consciousness, they manage to harness enough strength to use a boom box to deliver a vicious beating to Chip.

Tamra, now armed with the truth about Randall and Steven's nefarious plan, confronts her former friend and his accomplice. A scuffle ensues, during which Tamra delivers a devastating blow that inadvertently reveals Randall's vanity mural, depicting himself and Steven as mythical heroes saving Tamra and Ever from the clutches of zombified bullies. With the cat out of the bag, Ever's allies spring into action to rescue Danny and imprison Steven alongside Hunt and the other "zombies" in a cage.

As the dust settles, the group turns its attention to Randall, who has gravely wounded Danny. In a desperate bid to turn the tables, Ever dons a makeshift Freddy Krueger glove created by Chip, using it to inject Randall with multiple doses of the drug. As the effects take hold, Tamra and her cohorts join forces to bring down the reanimated Randall.

Days later, Wayne, Chip, Randall, and Steven are taken into custody, marking the beginning of an unlikely bond between former enemies. Ever and Tamra reconcile, their differences forgotten in the face of their shared ordeal. As they prepare to depart on the bus, a surprising revelation awaits: Mr. Lorenzo, thought to have met his demise, is revealed to be alive and well.

Weeks later, Ms. Operative, a representative from the Parent-Teacher Association, visits Randall and Steven in prison, announcing plans to revive the "Scared Straight" program. With an invite extended to these two individuals to serve as the masterminds behind this initiative, it becomes clear that even the most unlikely of heroes can find redemption.
