Who is the protagonist of 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit'?

Plot Summary

In the sultry summer of 1947, Los Angeles was abuzz with an unlikely coexistence: animated cartoon characters, or “toons,” lived alongside humans, their whimsical talents employed to entertain as film stars. Amidst this vibrant backdrop, Private Detective Eddie Valiant (played a somber tune on his saxophone, the echoes of his past still lingering like the haze of cigarette smoke in his dimly lit office. Five years prior, Teddy, his brother and business partner, had been brutally murdered by an unknown toon, leaving Eddie a shell of his former self, drowning in a sea of whiskey and regret.

R.K. Maroon, the enigmatic owner of Maroon Cartoon Studios, was frantic about the recent underperformance of his prized toon star, Roger Rabbit. With rumors swirling that Roger’s glamorous toon wife, Jessica, was having an illicit affair with Marvin Acme, the suave owner of both the Acme Corporation and Toontown, a metropolis inhabited by toons, Maroon hired Eddie to investigate. The gumshoe’s first lead took him to The Ink and Paint Club, where he watched Jessica perform with a mixture of fascination and suspicion.

Under the guise of a curious onlooker, Eddie snapped incriminating photos of Jessica and Acme engaging in a playful game of patty-cake. He presented these damning evidence to Roger, who was devastated by the revelation and promptly fled, refusing to believe his wife’s infidelity. The next morning, Acme was found brutally murdered, with evidence at the scene pointing to Roger as the prime suspect.

Eddie’s investigation led him to Judge Doom, a menacing human judge of Toontown, whose sinister plans for the city were already taking shape. Doom was accompanied by his five weasel minions, the Toon Patrol, who seemed to embody the very essence of evil. The judge confirmed that he had concocted a deadly plan to execute Roger using the “Dip,” a toxic cocktail of acetone, benzene, and turpentine capable of destroying the otherwise invulnerable toons.

As Eddie delved deeper into the mystery, Baby Herman, Roger’s pint-sized co-star, whispered a crucial hint: Acme’s missing will, which supposedly bequeathed Toontown to the toons, might have been the true motive behind the murder. Eddie returned to his office, where he found Roger waiting anxiously, insisting that he had been framed and begging for Eddie’s help.

After uncovering evidence of Acme’s will, Eddie reluctantly agreed to aid Roger, hiding him in a dingy bar tended by his on-again, off-again girlfriend, Dolores. Jessica confided in Eddie that Maroon had threatened to ruin Roger’s career unless she posed for the compromising photos, further solidifying her suspicions.

Meanwhile, Dolores’s research uncovered a shocking truth: Cloverleaf Industries had recently purchased the Pacific Electric railway system and would buy Toontown at midnight unless Acme’s will was found. Doom and the Toon Patrol closed in on Roger, but the toon and Eddie managed to escape with the help of Benny, a wacky toon taxi cab driver.

As they sought refuge in a local theater, Eddie caught a newsreel featuring Maroon selling his studio to Cloverleaf, casting a dark shadow over the city’s future. The stage was set for a thrilling adventure, as Eddie Valiant prepared to navigate the treacherous world of Toontown, where nothing was as it seemed and the stakes were higher than ever before.

As Eddie heads to the studio to confront Maroon, Jessica seizes the opportunity to snatch Roger, whisking him away from harm’s way. Unfazed by the sudden turn of events, Maroon confesses his true intentions: he had planned to strong-arm Acme into selling his company, knowing that Cloverleaf would swoop in and buy out the studio. The tension is palpable as Eddie watches Maroon meet a grisly end at the hands of an unknown assailant. Suspecting Jessica’s involvement, Eddie decides to put aside his intoxication and follows her into the unpredictable realm of Toontown.

Upon rescuing Eddie from Doom’s deadly aim, Jessica reveals that her daring rescue mission was motivated by a desire to safeguard Roger’s safety. However, this revelation comes too late, as Doom exposes his true nature: he is not only behind Acme’s and Maroon’s murders but also the mastermind behind the sinister plot to erase Toontown.

With Jessica and Eddie in custody, Doom reveals his diabolical plan to use a Dip-spraying machine to wipe out Toontown, paving the way for a freeway and decommissioning the railway system. Roger’s valiant attempt to save Jessica only serves to further entangle them, leaving the couple bound to a hook in front of the machine’s deadly sprayer.

Eddie seizes the moment, employing his vaudeville skills to distract the Toon Patrol with an onslaught of slapstick humor, ultimately sending their leader tumbling into the Dip. Doom, enraged by Eddie’s antics, is flattened by a steamroller but manages to survive, revealing his true identity as a disguised toon and Teddy’s murderer.

As the stakes reach new heights, Eddie finds himself struggling against Doom’s cartoonish abilities. With cunning and quick thinking, he empties the machine’s Dip supply, sending Doom hurtling towards oblivion. The machine, now devoid of its deadly liquid, crashes into Toontown, where it is subsequently destroyed by an onrushing train.

As the dust settles, Eddie realizes that Acme’s will was written in temporarily invisible ink, confirming the toons’ rightful inheritance of Toontown. With his sense of humor restored and a newfound appreciation for the absurdity of life, Eddie joins Dolores, Roger, Jessica, and the toons as they celebrate their victory and claim their rightful place in this wacky world.
