In the gripping tale of family dysfunction, Kyle Hadley and his self-destructive sister Marylee find themselves entangled in a web of wealth and personal turmoil as the children of Texas oil baron Jasper Hadley. Burdened by their familial riches and their own demons, their inability to forge meaningful relationships becomes painfully evident. Marylee harbors deep feelings for Mitch Wayne, Kyle’s childhood friend who works as a geologist for the Hadley Oil Company; however, he only sees her as a sister. In her sorrow, Marylee turns to fleeting affairs with local men to fill the void left by Mitch’s indifference.

Meanwhile, Kyle is desperate for his father’s approval, yet Jasper instead admires Mitch’s humble nature and strong work ethic, leaving Kyle feeling overshadowed. This dynamic sets off a chain of events when Kyle and Mitch travel to New York City for business. There, they cross paths with the enigmatic Lucy Moore, a secretary at the Hadley office. Despite her initial interest in Mitch, it’s Kyle who begins to pursue her, leading to a whirlwind romance that culminates in a hasty marriage after a trip to Miami.

The pair returns to Texas, where Lucy becomes a steadying influence on Kyle for their first year of marriage. However, Marylee’s obsession with Mitch continues to grow, despite his own longing for Lucy. Everything takes a dark turn when, shortly after their anniversary, Kyle learns from his doctor that he may be infertile. This revelation plunges him into a deep depression, exacerbated by his heavy drinking. One fateful night at the country club, Kyle’s drunken behavior culminates in a public embarrassment for Lucy, leaving her to grapple with the fallout.

In the midst of family turmoil, Jasper discusses his disappointment in his reckless children with Mitch. Shortly after, an accident occurs, leading to Jasper’s fatal fall down the staircase, intensifying the instability surrounding Kyle. Despite Lucy’s attempts to pull him from his slumbering despair, Kyle spirals further, enabling a flurry of unresolved tensions.

As Mitch confides to Lucy about his plans to leave for Iran, a routine doctor’s visit unravels more complications when Lucy finds out she’s pregnant, aware of the implications regarding Kyle’s supposed infertility. The revelation shatters the fragile peace when Lucy inadvertently reveals her condition during dinner with Kyle, leading to a volatile confrontation. Consumed by jealousy and whiskey, Kyle violently confronts Lucy, leading to a tragic miscarriage that occurs that same night.

Desperation pushes Kyle to seek revenge on Mitch, resulting in a tragic altercation where Marylee’s attempts to intervene turn fatal, ultimately resulting in Kyle’s accidental death. The fallout lingers as Marylee’s guilt turns into a manipulative plan to coerce Mitch into marriage under the guise of protecting her brother’s legacy. However, at the inquest, she recounts the truth, leaving Mitch and Lucy to leave the shattered family behind while Marylee is left to face the consequences of her actions, forever haunted by the loss of her brother and her own shattered dreams.
