What significant event marks the beginning of Wyatt Earp's story?
During the tumultuous times of the American Civil War, a young Wyatt Earp finds himself trapped on his family’s farm in Pella, Iowa, as his older brothers, Virgil and James, valiantly serve in the Union Army. Driven by a desperate longing to contribute, Wyatt attempts to sneak away to join the military, only to be thwarted by his father. After the war concludes, his brothers return home, but not without scars—James carries the weight of serious injuries. In the chaos of changing lives, Wyatt witnesses a man’s harrowing death during a nearby gunfight, an occurrence that leaves him sickened and shaken.
As the years pass, Wyatt reinvents himself as a wagon driver out west, making a name for himself as a fight referee. He soon finds himself in a clash with a local bully, leading to a high-stakes confrontation where, despite the bully’s intentions to harm him, Wyatt bravely disarms and overcomes him, seizing his weapon. Following this, he returns to Missouri, where he marries his childhood love, Urilla Sutherland. They settle into their own home, but tragedy strikes when Urilla succumbs to typhoid fever during her pregnancy. Heartbroken, Wyatt spirals into a deep depression and, in a fit of despair, burns their home and belongings, turning to alcohol as he wanders from place to place, eventually arriving in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. His life takes a turn when he attempts to rob a man but is caught; his father intervenes to secure his release, instructing him to never return to Arkansas.
Embracing a new path, Wyatt works as a buffalo hunter and forms a bond with Bat Masterson and his brother Ed Masterson. In time, he earns a reputation as an admirable deputy marshal in Wichita, Kansas, which leads him to Dodge City, where he initially struggles with authority but makes his mark. During this time, he encounters Josie Marcus, an actress, and begins a tumultuous romantic relationship with Mattie Blaylock, showcasing the complexities of his emotional life as the Masterson brothers join him in maintaining order. However, Wyatt’s often excessive methods prompt the city council to dismiss him in favor of the more subdued Ed, which forces him to pivot to a different job with the railroad.
When Wyatt pursues the outlaw Dave Rudabaugh, he meets the charming yet dangerous Doc Holliday and uncovers a dangerous path of loyalty and vengeance. After receiving tragic news of Ed’s death—which stirred up more violence—Wyatt returns to Dodge City to restore order, eventually leading his family to Tombstone, Arizona. Shortly after their arrival, conflict with the notorious Cowboy gang arises, particularly as Wyatt’s relationship with Josie complicates existing tensions.
Amidst the chaos, his brothers, Morgan and Virgil, take on prominent roles in law enforcement, arresting several of the Cowboys. With the weight of family and loyalty pressing down on them, Wyatt’s brother Virgil takes over as marshal after the shocking murder of Fred White. The tension explodes into violence, leading to the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, which taints the brothers’ reputations as lawmen. Tragedy continues to follow as Morgan is killed, igniting a fierce vendetta against the remaining Cowboys.
Many years later, Wyatt and Josie venture to Alaska in pursuit of gold. During their journey, a young man recognizes him and recounts Wyatt’s past heroism in saving his uncle, whom he refers to as “Tommy Behind-The-Deuce.” Reflecting on his storied life, Wyatt tells Josie, > “Some people say it didn’t happen that way,” to which she reassuringly responds, “Never mind them, Wyatt. It happened that way.”
In the epilogue of this remarkable life, it is noted that Doc Holliday passed away six years later in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. The notorious gang he battled continued to face mysterious downfalls long after Morgan’s murder, and Wyatt’s enduring partnership with Josie lasted an impressive 47 years, concluding with Wyatt’s death at the age of 80 in Los Angeles.
