What is Steve Dallas' profession?

Plot Summary

Steve Dallas (weatherman extraordinaire) squanders his paychecks on fleeting romances, leveraging his WRSC weather forecasting gig to indulge in a life of reckless abandon. Meanwhile, he entrusts the actual forecasting duties to Delia Shepard, his diligent assistant. In his downtime, Steve hangs out with childhood buddy Ben Baker, a free-spirited hippie who’s perpetually high on cannabis.

The tranquility is disrupted when Ben bursts into WRSC, his countenance transformed by anguish and urgency. Steve obliges Ben’s request for a ride to the funeral, but their tardiness becomes a minor casualty of Ben’s insatiable desire to rescue a batch of crayfish from a doomed fate. Despite arriving late, Ben is welcomed with open arms by his stepmother Angela, a compassionate special education teacher who married Ben’s father just five years prior.

At the reading of the will, the trio discovers that Angela has been left nothing, as per her own wishes; Ben’s sister Terry inherits $350,000; and Ben himself receives the family farm, general store, and a staggering $2 million. The news sends Ben into a whirlwind of creative fervor, prompting him to decide that his newfound wealth will be better spent establishing an unconventional school dedicated to spreading New Age philosophies. Classes are promptly conducted in the backyard of the family farm, but Terry soon intervenes, contesting the will by questioning Ben’s mental fitness and forcing him to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

As the day of the appointment approaches, Ben seeks solace in the tranquil rhythms of a nearby Amish farm, convinced that their simple way of life can serve as a model for his future educational endeavors. The psychiatrist concludes that while Ben may be bipolar, he poses no threat to himself or others, allowing him to retain control over his inheritance.

In celebration of this triumph, Ben and Steve engage in an impromptu drinking session, during which Steve attempts to confess his genuine feelings to Angela. However, the evening takes a melancholic turn as Ben succumbs to a depressive episode, grappling with the existential implications of his newfound wealth and sense of purpose.

As Ben struggles to find meaning in his life, he turns to Angela for comfort, and they share an intimate moment. The next morning, having regained his composure through medication and introspection, Ben shaves off his iconic beard, meets with Terry, and hands her complete control over the family store. Undeterred by the prospect of change, Terry begins making plans to demolish the old store and replace it with a modern structure, signaling the beginning of a new era for the Baker family.

As Steve’s existential malaise deepens, he finds himself irresistibly drawn to the authenticity and warmth that Angela embodies, prompting him to make the arduous journey to the farm to reconnect with her. However, his visit is marred by Terry’s revelation that Ben had succumbed to temptation and slept with Angela, a betrayal that sends Steve into a rage of indignation and hurt. Despite having been a pillar of sobriety for days in order to impress Angela, Steve’s frustrations boil over, and he abandons all pretenses, allowing his pent-up emotions to consume him as he returns to the city to drown his sorrows in drink and substance abuse.

Meanwhile, Ben, determined to make amends for past mistakes, makes good on a promise to himself by relocating to the town center, seeking to rebuild his life from scratch. As Steve struggles to come to terms with the loss of his sense of purpose, he undergoes an identity crisis of epic proportions, forced to confront the fact that his very existence had been defined by his relationship with Ben. With a newfound appreciation for the futility of his former path, Steve makes the bold decision to quit his job as a weatherman and return to the farm, where he is able to reconcile with Ben and rediscover his sense of self.

As the film reaches its poignant conclusion, Steve extends an olive branch to Angela, inviting her to join him on the farm and help him build a new life. With forgiveness in the air, their romance begins to blossom, while Ben, having finally found solace, takes tentative steps towards a brighter future, his gaze turning to a kind and gentle neighbor who is introducing him to her young son, marking the beginning of a fresh chapter in his journey.
