In this film, presented in richly detailed stop-motion animation featuring marionettes, we delve into the life of Michael Stone (voiced by David Thewlis). Set against the backdrop of 2005, the narrative begins in darkness, as we hear various voices converge into one — that of Tom Noonan. As the story unfolds, Michael finds himself aboard an airplane heading to Cincinnati, reflecting on a letter from a former girlfriend that conjures her angry visage, chastising him in a rather intense manner.

Upon landing, Michael interacts with a nervous flyer sitting next to him, who apologizes for clutching his hand during the descent because he usually has his wife with him. Navigating airport terminals, he observes the peculiar phenomenon where everyone seems to share the same voice. He embarks on a cab ride to the Fregoli Hotel, a title hinting at a psychological condition where individuals perceive others as the same person, masked in varying identities. The cab driver, recognizing Michael’s British accent, engages him, pointing out local attractions and insisting he should try the Cincinnati chili — a dish vastly different from what he’s used to.

Once at the hotel, whispers of Michael Stone ripple through the lobby. He checks into a smoking room, and experiences a rather odd interaction with the bellhop, who highlights mundane aspects of the room as if it were a grand gesture. The atmosphere continues to characterize a subtle detachment common in Michael’s existence. He consumes antidepressants and attempts to call his wife, only to find her voice eerily identical to the other characters he’s encountered. Their tepid conversation is interrupted by a brief call from his son, who too has the same disembodied voice, amplifying Michael’s sense of isolation.

Later, he prepares for his keynote speech, yet finds himself distracted by a voyeuristic incident from a neighboring building. After a series of unfortunate conversations with a bitter ex, he decides to find solace in a toy store, where his intentions take an unexpected turn due to the inappropriate display merchandise.

The evening takes a pivotal turn as he encounters Lisa (voiced by Jennifer Jason Leigh), an empathetic yet awkward admirer seeking him out. Their conversation sparks a genuine connection, as Lisa, who adores his self-help book, fascinates him with her unique charm and vulnerability. They share intimate moments in a hotel room, entwined in each other’s lives through heartfelt conversations that bridge their disparate existences, ultimately leading to a poignant night of intimacy.

However, the tranquility shatters when Michael is abruptly summoned by the hotel manager, leading to an absurd encounter that distorts his reality. The further he delves into this realm, the more he perceives that every voice around him, even Lisa’s, begins to morph into Noonan’s distinct tone, bringing with it a creeping horror of recognizing the same repetition in faces and voices.

Michael wrestles with his inner tumult during a disastrous speech where he reveals the essence of human existence clashing against uniformity. As he tries to connect, he instead unravels, leaving behind his former ambitions as he fades into despair, straying further from the individual he yearned to be.

Returning home after this spiral descent, Michael confronts the unsettling reality that his wife and son echo the same dissonant voice as every stranger he encountered, adjusting to a disconcerting party thrown in his honor but finding no familiarity amongst the faces. In the final moments, Lisa pens a heartfelt letter reflecting on their transient connection, reminding Michael of the fleeting nature of individuality amid an overwhelming sea of sameness.
