At the edge of the world in Igloolik, a mystical land in the Eastern Arctic wilderness, Qulitalik must say farewell to his sister, Panikpak, the wife of Kumaglak. He vows to heed her call whenever she needs him, and she gifts him her husband’s rabbit’s foot, a token of spiritual strength.
In a haunting flashback, the arrival of a mysterious shaman, Tungajuaq, upends their community. During a terrifying spiritual duel, camp leader Kumaglak meets his demise. The shaman boldly removes Kumaglak’s walrus-tooth necklace and places it around the neck of Kumaglak’s son, Sauri, who assumes leadership. Over time, the dark magic of the shaman sows discord and animosity among the villagers.
Tulimaq, once the laughingstock of the community, faces ill fate in hunting, struggling to feed his family. However, Panikpak, filled with compassion, brings sustenance for Tulimaq’s sons, Atanarjuat and Amaqjuaq, with the hope that one day they will restore harmony. As they grow, Atanarjuat becomes a swift runner while Amaqjuaq excels in strength, igniting a rivalry with Sauri and his son, Oki.
During a spirited game of ‘wolf tag’, Atanarjuat chases after the beautiful Atuat, inciting jealousy in Oki. Oki’s sister, Puja, is also drawn to Atanarjuat. Emulating bravery, Atanarjuat fights Oki and earns the right to marry Atuat. However, in a twist of fate, Atanarjuat departs to hunt caribou but is swayed by Sauri at his camp to take Puja along. Camped by a serene lake, the two become intimate, entwining their fates.
Eventually, Atanarjuat finds himself trapped in a troubled marriage with both Atuat and Puja. In a tragic revelation, he discovers his brother with Puja, igniting a fierce confrontation. As Puja accuses Atanarjuat of attempted murder, Sauri and Oki plot his demise while Panikpak remains doubtful of Puja’s claims. In an unexpected turn, Puja returns to plead forgiveness and is welcomed back.
One fateful day, the women go egg hunting, but cunningly, Puja places a boot outside their tent as a trap. Oki and two accomplices, lurking in the shadows, stab through the tent, killing Amaqjuaq. Startled, Oki glimpses the spirit of his grandfather, Kumaglak. In a harrowing escape, Atanarjuat, stripped and barefoot, dashes out into the unforgiving cold, pursued fiercely by Oki’s gang. Miraculously, he dodges death by leaping over a treacherous ice crack, ultimately collapsing in exhaustion with bloodied feet.
Rescued by Qulitalik and his family, he hides from Oki. Back in Igloolik, Sauri rebuffs Oki’s intentions toward Atuat, leading to a brutal act where Oki rapes her. In a tragic accident disguised as fate, Oki kills Sauri and seizes power as the new camp leader. In a moment of desperation, Panikpak rekindles her bond with Qulitalik, summoning him as promised. He responds to her heart’s call, utilizing the rabbit’s foot to break the spell of hatred.
As Oki, now under the enchantment, captures a rabbit unassisted, Atanarjuat, healed from his ordeal, returns home, joyously reuniting with Atuat but casting aside Puja. With Oki infected by the spell, he seeks a grand feast. Yet Atanarjuat sets a trap, inviting Oki and his accomplices into an igloo, slipping antlers on his feet to dominate the ice and declare the bloodshed over.
Now, the community comes together in a moment of reckoning. Qulitalik conjures the spirits, and the malevolent shaman Tungajuaq reappears, grunting menacingly. With the potent essence of the walrus and sacred soil, Qulitalik confronts the shaman, with Panikpak rallying the village through a symbolic shaking of the walrus tooth necklace. The shaman meets his end, vanishing into nothingness. Panikpak then proclaims a time for forgiveness, exiling Oki, Puja, and their accomplices, sealing their fates as they depart Igloolik forever, leaving behind a community ready to reconcile and heal.
