Plot Summary

A helicopter hovers over the dense, treacherous Panamanian jungle. Inside, a group of Army Ranger trainees and their commanding officer, Master Sergeant Nathan West, undertake a challenging training mission. Their goal is to navigate the unforgiving jungle during a hurricane, training with live ammunition to hit concealed metal targets before regrouping at a bunker.

Seventeen grueling hours later, Colonel Bill Styles (Timothy Daly) is flying in a helicopter, anxiously searching for the team that was supposed to return to base long ago. To his horror, he witnesses three Rangers, later revealed to be Ray Dunbar, Second Lieutenant Levi Kendall, and Mueller, stagger from the jungle. It becomes clear that chaos has ensued as Dunbar and Mueller are engaged in gunfire amongst themselves, with an unconscious Kendall slung over Dunbar’s shoulder. In a desperate act, Dunbar is forced to kill Mueller in self-defense, while the rest of their team, including West, remains unaccounted for and presumed dead.

Back at the base, Captain Julia Osborne (Connie Nielsen) is unable to glean any information from Dunbar during a tense interrogation. Puzzled by his silence, she encounters a breakthrough when Dunbar insists he will only talk to a fellow Ranger from outside the base, scribbling an “8” within a circle on a pad of paper. Aware of the significance of the “8,” Colonel Styles reluctantly recruits Tom Hardy, an experienced interrogator and former Ranger now embroiled in a DEA investigation for alleged bribery.

Initially, neither Hardy nor Osborne trust each other, but they are constrained to collaborate as they have only six hours before authorities arrive to collect Dunbar and Kendall for formal questioning. With time of the essence, Hardy manages to engage Dunbar, who miraculously starts to communicate after a long period of silence. The tension escalates as Dunbar reveals that West was notorious for his aggressive and merciless leadership style, particularly with a soldier named Pike, who had been a part of the ill-fated training mission alongside Dunbar, Kendall, Mueller, and others.

As Hardy and Osborne dig deeper, they learn that Pike had ample motivation to resent West deeply, leading them to consider the possibility that Pike may have wanted West dead. Dunbar asserts that he is one of the last surviving members of the team and brings forth unsettling details surrounding how the team discovered West was murdered—not by gunfire, but by a white phosphorus grenade.

The next day is fraught with challenges as the investigation unfolds. Hardy and Osborne question Second Lieutenant Kendall, now recovering from his wounds but unwilling to share the whole truth. A bombshell drops when Kendall confesses his sexual orientation, claiming he was targeted by West, who had allegedly threatened him in the chopper prior to the incident. The turmoil of the training mission unfolds as narrative threads from both Dunbar and Kendall weave together, revealing a shocking conspiracy linked to drug trafficking and betrayal among the ranks.

A tense confrontation occurs between Dunbar and Kendall’s conflicting narratives, leading to a heartbreaking conclusion as the pieces of the puzzle begin to come together. As they delve into evidence and testimonies, the investigation catches the attention of a deeper, darker secret—one that hints at a rogue group of former Rangers known as Section 8, with West at the helm of the operations.

Amidst the chaos of grappling with this covert organization and uncovering the layers of deceit, Osborne connects the dots between the interplay of the characters, including Hardy’s motives, as the suspense thickens. The narrative crescendos as Osborne realizes that they have been following a maze of lies, leading them to discover that West is actually alive and involved with Hardy’s squad.

In the thrilling climax, the audience learns that these characters of deception intertwined with dark alliances aren’t simply protectors but are instead engaged in an undercover operation themselves to dismantle the very drug cartel they initially believed was linked to West’s fate. This twist of fate prompts Hardy and West to extend an offer to Osborne to join their ranks, revealing the intricate facade they had maintained in order to infiltrate the cartel while ensuring justice prevails. The movie concludes with a potent ambiguity, as Osborne is left to navigate her new reality in a world that once appeared black-and-white but now glimmers with shades of gray.
