There is a biological catastrophe unfolding, so dire that the Center for Disease Control has urgently called upon Dr. Sheila Casper from her field study of bats in Skull Valley, Arizona, to travel to Gallup, Texas. Just six days prior, two genetically modified flying foxes escaped from the laboratory of Dr. Alexander McCabe. Initially, they targeted animals, but their focus has now shifted to humans.
Dr. Sheila Casper, a wildlife zoologist with a specialization in bats (Chiroptera), is on a mission to locate these dangerous creatures before they can wreak further havoc or infect other bats in the area. Teaming up with Sheriff Emmett Kimsey and CDC expert Dr. Tobe Hodge, portrayed by Carlos Jacott, Sheila and her assistant, Jimmy Sands, begin their search for the bats’ nesting location.
On their first night in the field, chaos erupts when they encounter a swarm of bats. In a desperate attempt, they manage to capture one and implant a homing device beneath its skin. However, when they release it, hoping it will guide them to its roost, the other bats quickly turn on it, killing it almost instantly as if they were aware of the plan. It soon becomes evident that these creatures have been engineered for super-intelligence.
With the situation escalating, the town of Gallup faces imminent evacuation as the mayor broadcasts a crucial warning for everyone to stay indoors and secure their homes—though, tragically, many ignore this plea. The bats invade, causing rampant destruction, with people firing guns, cars crashing, and innocent victims falling prey to the mayhem. Among the casualties is Dr. Tobe Hodge.
Faced with an overwhelming crisis, military forces arrive to assist in evacuating the area, providing Sheila and her team with a mere 48 hours before they are prepared to resort to drastic measures. Sheila chooses the most easily defendable location, the local school, as their operational headquarters. The military promises to utilize a Chromo-B340 satellite to pinpoint the bats’ roost with infrared technology.
Even upon discovering their nesting site, the challenge remains: how to eradicate every last destructive bat? With their numbers reaching into the thousands, mere bombing risks scattering the group and complicating the issue further, as Sheila wisely points out. Poisoning is also out of the question, given that the common bat toxin is only slightly effective and poses severe risks to human life. Sheila proposes an innovative solution: by lowering the temperature within the cave, they can induce hibernation at 40 degrees F, or even freeze them to death at 32 degrees.
To aid in this plan, Jimmy coordinates the delivery of an NGIC Industrial Coolant, comprised of freon, carbon dioxide, and oxygen, for immediate deployment once the roost’s location is confirmed. However, in a twist of fate, the military moves to wire the mine with explosives overnight, disregarding Sheila’s carefully crafted plan. The bats, fiercely protective of their creator McCabe, turn lethal against the military personnel who attempt to capture them.
Come morning, as Sheila and Emmett suit up for action, they are met with disheartening news: the coolant unit failed to activate, leaving only the bomb and gas option imminent in less than an hour. Unwavered, Sheila believes they can still salvage the situation if they rush to get the coolant operational, so she and Emmett venture into the mine while Jimmy keeps watch outside, equipped to detonate the entrance should it become necessary.
In a race against time, they wade through bat guano but successfully activate the coolant. Yet, their exit becomes a daring escape as the bats give chase. It’s a frantic sprint to safety! Just as they burst out of the mine, Jimmy triggers the explosives, ensuring the bats cannot follow.
As they drive away, a chilling moment unfolds—a lone escaped bat pokes its head out from the sand along the roadside. The car rolls over it with a sickening splat.
Biological Catastrophe Unfolds
A severe biological crisis is declared by the Center for Disease Control, prompting a swift action to contain the situation. Dr. Sheila Casper is called from her field study in Skull Valley, Arizona, to tackle the serious threat in Gallup, Texas.
Genetically Modified Bats Escape
Just six days before Dr. Casper's arrival, two genetically modified flying foxes escape from Dr. Alexander McCabe's laboratory. These engineered creatures initially targeted animals but soon began shifting their focus towards humans, posing a terrifying new threat.
Search for the Bats Begins
Dr. Sheila Casper teams up with Sheriff Emmett Kimsey and CDC expert Dr. Tobe Hodge to find the bats. Together with her assistant Jimmy Sands, they embark on a critical mission to locate the bats' new nesting site before further destruction occurs.
Encounter with Bats
On their first night in the field, chaos erupts as Sheila and her team encounter a massive swarm of bats. In a desperate attempt to regain control, they capture one and implant a homing device, but their plan ends in tragedy as the captured bat is killed by its swarm.
Evacuation Warning Issued
As the situation escalates, the mayor of Gallup broadcasts an urgent warning, urging residents to stay indoors. Unfortunately, many ignore the plea, leading to widespread chaos as the bats begin their devastating invasion of the town.
Fatal Consequences of the Attack
The invasion causes rampant destruction, as people resort to firing weapons and cars crash amidst the chaos. Tragically, among the casualties is Dr. Tobe Hodge, further heightening the urgency of the situation for Sheila and her team.
Military Assistance Arrives
Faced with overwhelming crisis, military forces arrive in Gallup to assist with the emergency response. They provide Sheila and her team with only 48 hours before resorting to drastic measures if their efforts do not yield results.
Operational Headquarters Established
Sheila designates the local school as their operational headquarters, a strategic location that could offer some protection. The military promises to utilize advanced technology to locate the bats' roost with their Chromo-B340 satellite.
Discovering the Bats' Nesting Site
After much effort, Sheila and her team discover the nesting location of the bats. However, they face significant challenges in eradicating the creatures, as traditional bombing methods could complicate the situation due to the bats' large numbers.
Innovative Eradication Plan Proposed
To tackle the enormous bat population, Sheila proposes a unique solution: lowering temperatures in the cave to induce hibernation or freeze them. This innovative approach is crucial in order to minimize harm to humans and preserve the ecosystem.
Coolant Delivery Coordination
Jimmy Sands coordinates the urgent delivery of NGIC Industrial Coolant for deployment once the bats' roost is confirmed. The team is hopeful that this plan will effectively handle the bat threat without resulting in unnecessary casualties.
Military's Reckless Decision
In a shocking twist, the military decides to wire the mine with explosives overnight, undermining Sheila's plan. This reckless decision prompts the bats to fiercely protect their territory, leading to deadly confrontations with military personnel.
Race Against Time
As dawn breaks, Sheila and Emmett suit up for action but learn that the coolant has failed to activate. With mere minutes left, they rush into the mine, determined to salvage their mission despite the looming threat of the explosive remains.
Daring Escape from the Mine
After navigating bat guano, Sheila and Emmett successfully activate the coolant but face a frantic escape as the bats chase them. Just as they break free from the mine, Jimmy detonates the explosives, preventing the bats from following them.
Final Encounter
In a chilling moment as they drive away, a rogue bat emerges from the sand alongside the roadside. The scene concludes with a sickening crunch, highlighting the ongoing consequences of the biological disaster and the constant threat these engineered creatures pose.
