Rahul Seth is a wealthy young Indian-Canadian residing in Toronto, who faces mounting pressure from his widowed mother to find a bride following the tragic accident that took the life of his white pop singer girlfriend, Kimberly. His mother’s opposition to Rahul’s relationship with a non-Indian woman has led her to declare that his sister Twinky’s upcoming wedding to Bobby will not proceed until he secures a suitable Indian partner. This urgency is heightened when Rahul learns that Twinky is expecting a child, necessitating her marriage sooner rather than later to uphold the family’s honor.
In his search for a solution, Rahul visits a bar where he meets Sue, initially believing her to be a Spanish escort (though purely as a non-sexual companion). He hires her to pretend to be his fiancée, drawn by her appearance which he feels aligns with Indian ideals. However, he soon discovers that Sue is, in fact, Indian—her name, short for Sunita. Despite feeling betrayed at first, their relationship matures, especially when she helps boost the self-esteem of his younger brother, Govind, who struggles with feeling neglected and misunderstood.
As Rahul and Sue continue to grow closer, Mrs. Seth, Rahul’s mother, is satisfied by her son’s newfound relationship, allowing Twinky’s wedding plans to advance. The two develop a deeper bond, exchanging personal stories. It is revealed that Sue once rebelled against her parents’ attempts to marry her off to the well-meaning yet foolish professional wrestler Killer Khalsa. Her anguish at being treated as a pawn in a marriage proposal leads her to play pranks in retaliation, showcasing her strong will and unfiltered nature as she engages with everyone around her, including Rocky, Rahul’s driver, who is secretly a well-known drag queen.
However, their developing romance faces challenges when a drunken friend at Bobby’s bachelor party slurs that Sue is a prostitute and that he has previously paid her for sexual services. This claim shakes Rahul’s confidence and prompts Sue to leave him, deeply hurt that he would doubt her integrity. He then must come clean to his family about the true nature of his relationship with Sue and faces the disappointment of his mother, who pushes Twinky’s wedding back due to Rahul’s lack of a genuine partner. During this turmoil, Twinky informs their mother that she and Bobby have eloped, putting an end to the melodrama over Rahul and Sue.
Motivated by Rocky’s support, his wise grandmother—who often quotes Shakespeare—, and the spirits of his father and Kimberly, Rahul wins back Sue’s affection. In a touching balcony scene, facilitated by Sue’s parents, he professes his feelings, but she unexpectedly leaves him behind. Just as he is about to retreat in his limo, he changes course and instructs Rocky to take him back, only to discover that Sue has taken the wheel, ready to embark on their next chapter together.
