Prior to his imprisonment, bard Edgin Darvis was a member of the Harpers, a renowned order dedicated to maintaining peace. However, his world shattered when his wife fell victim to the very disciples of a Red Wizard he had apprehended. Seeking a fresh start, he teamed up with barbarian Holga Kilgore to carve out a new life for themselves and his daughter, Kira. Embracing a life outside the law, they joined forces with Simon Aumar, an amateur sorcerer, Forge Fitzwilliam, a rogue con artist, and Forge’s enigmatic associate Sofina.
During a raid on a Harper stronghold, Edgin aimed to seize a powerful artifact known as the Tablet of Reawakening, hoping it would allow him to bring back his wife. However, their plan was foiled, leading to their capture while their companions managed to escape. After spending two grueling years in the icy prison of Revel’s End, they finally break free, only to discover that they had been pardoned without their knowledge. Returning to Neverwinter, they learn that Forge has taken control, manipulating Kira into believing that her father’s ambitions were responsible for his imprisonment.
As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that Sofina is, in fact, a Red Wizard, having colluded with Forge to orchestrate their capture. In a tense confrontation, Sofina attempts to bring an end to Edgin and Holga’s lives but, through sheer determination, they manage to escape. With a newfound resolve, they plot to rob Forge’s vault during the upcoming High Sun Games, aiming to recover the tablet to prove their innocence to Kira and restore Edgin’s wife. Despite the gladiatorial games being banned, Forge reinstates them, enticing the populace with promises of wealth and tourism.
To execute their plan, Edgin and Holga seek Simon’s assistance and find themselves enlisting Doric, a druid whose community is under threat from Forge’s logging activities. In a clever twist, Doric transforms into a fly and sneaks into Forge’s castle to assess the vault’s magical protections. Realizing they need a powerful item known as The Helm of Disjunction, they embark on a journey to a graveyard to consult Holga’s ancestors. With a talisman, Simon briefly resurrects the dead to uncover vital information about the helm’s whereabouts, leading them to a paladin named Xenk Yandar who possesses the sought-after relic.
After agreeing to share their rewards with the people upon their success, Xenk guides the group through perilous paths in the Underdark. In a gripping sequence of events, they face off against Thayan assassins dispatched by Sofina and make a desperate escape from a perilous encounter with an oversized red dragon named Themberchaud.
As they grapple with the helm’s potent magic, Simon struggles to control its power, prompting them to devise a plan to infiltrate the vault during the chaotic games. In a twist of fate, Sofina, disguised as Kira, betrays them, leading to their capture. Yet, the group manages a daring escape, uncovering Forge’s plan to transport stolen treasures via boat. A thrilling rescue ensues where they save Kira from Forge, who threatens her life.
Unbeknownst to them, Sofina orchestrated the grand games to attract a crowd for her dark purpose—to turn them into an undead army using a devastating curse. In a race against time, the heroes rally to spread the stolen riches across the city using hot-air balloons, freeing the crowds from impending doom.
In a climactic showdown, Sofina retaliates, and a harrowing battle ensues. Simon thwarts her time-manipulating spell, giving Kira the opportunity to use an invisibility pendant given to her by Edgin and Holga. With bravery, Doric transforms into an owlbear and confronts Sofina, ultimately leading to her demise as debris falls upon her. However, the victory comes at a cost, as Holga is gravely injured. In a poignant moment, Edgin uses the tablet to revive Holga, realizing that his motivation to resurrect his wife was selfish, while Holga’s bond with their family had truly grown.
With the old Lord of Neverwinter restored to power, the group is celebrated as heroes. In a fitting conclusion, Xenk ensures that Forge receives justice for his treachery, sending him back to face the consequences of his actions in Revel’s End.
