Zooni Ali Beg, portrayed by Kajol, is a blind girl from Kashmir who embarks on her very first journey without her parents to attend a dance ceremony celebrating Independence Day in Delhi. During this adventure, she encounters the charming Rehan Khan, played by Aamir Khan, a flirtatious tour guide who quickly captures her heart. Despite the warnings from her friends about Rehan’s nature, Zooni can’t help but fall in love with him. He takes her on an enchanting private tour of New Delhi, and the two share what they believe to be a singularly beautiful night together before Zooni’s departure.
However, on the day she’s set to leave, Rehan surprises her by sneaking onto the train, and with the support of her friends, he carries Zooni off, signaling the anticipated start of their life together. Motivated by Rehan’s encouragement, Zooni undergoes surgery to restore her sight. Rehan promises to return while he goes to pick up Zooni’s parents from the train station. Tragically, when Zooni awakens, her parents are by her side, but Rehan is nowhere to be found. An unforeseen tragedy has struck, presented to her through a piece of fabric that she identifies as a sweater she made for Rehan, discovered among the remnants of a horrifying accident ostensibly caused by terrorists advocating for Kashmiri independence. Devastated and engulfed in guilt, Zooni returns to her homeland, believing Rehan to be dead.
As time passes, it is unveiled that Rehan is actually alive and working as an undercover agent within the terrorist faction. He grapples with the weight of his choices, fully aware that their relationship could spell doom for Zooni. Fast forward seven years, the extremist group orchestrates an ambitious plan to construct a nuclear device using parts pilfered from India, Pakistan, and Russia, targeting the heart of the escalating conflict in Kashmir. The only component they lack is the activation device, and the seemingly deceased Rehan has infiltrated the Indian military to retrieve this critical hardware.
During a secretive helicopter transfer, Rehan outsmarts his comrades, drugging them and destroying their transport while parachuting to safety. Meanwhile, a determined intelligence officer, Malini Tyagi, takes swift action to thwart Rehan’s escape but struggles against his elusiveness. As fate would have it, a storm drives him to find refuge in a remote house belonging to none other than Zooni and her child, who is named after his assumedly deceased father. Oblivious to each other’s past, Zooni and her father fail to recognize Rehan.
Zooni’s young son becomes enamored with Rehan, calling him “the dead man,” which eventually leads to a complicated dynamic as Rehan reflects on their past together. As Rehan reveals his identity, emotions run high—both having suppressed their love for far too long. They marry in a simple yet heartfelt ceremony conducted by her father. Yet, the happiness is short-lived as Zooni uncovers Rehan’s true identity as the target of a nationwide manhunt after seeing a news broadcast.
In a tense turn of events, Zooni’s father tragically loses his life while trying to protect Rehan, igniting suspicions in Zooni’s heart about her husband’s actions. When she learns the shocking truth about the series of events leading to her father’s death, Zooni embarks on a quest to uncover the full extent of Rehan’s perilous life, all while dealing with her conflicting emotions. Desperate to stop the catastrophic threat posed by Rehan and his affiliates, Zooni is forced to confront her love in a heart-wrenching manner.
During a climactic confrontation, Zooni makes a devastating choice, proclaiming her love for Rehan as she shoots him, while in the skies above, a fight unfolds between their destinies. Ultimately, Rehan dies in Zooni’s embrace, and the final moments orchestrate a somber reflection at their grave, where she shares profound words of wisdom with their son: “It is easy to choose between right and wrong. But to choose the greater of two goods or the lesser of two evils; those are the choices of our life,” echoing a piece of advice from her father.
