The arrival of police officers next to his hospital bed marks the start of a tumultuous journey that culminates in his arrest for murder. As the interrogation commences, Kunene decides to share his harrowing backstory, laying bare the intricate tapestry of his life.
The film transports us through the Soweto Township, where a young and hopeful Lucky, alongside his friend Zakes, grapples with the crushing weight of poverty and despair. Their lives take an unexpected turn when they cross paths with Nazareth, a former guerrilla trained in Russia who has morphed into a local crime lord. This encounter entangles them in a web of criminal activities, causing Lucky’s aspirations for education to fade, replaced instead by the promise of financial gain and the adrenaline rush from petty thefts.
As their crimes escalate in both number and severity, Lucky begins to feel the pull of loyalty to Nazareth, counterbalanced by an emerging discomfort with their escalating offenses. The turning point arrives during a calamitous final robbery that results in Nazareth’s imprisonment and the deaths of many from their crew. In the wake of this disaster, Lucky and Zakes narrowly escape with their lives and resolve to start afresh in Johannesburg.
Fast forward a decade, we find Lucky, now a successful taxi business owner in Hillbrow. Unfortunately, this newfound success is short-lived, as a violent carjacking plunges him into chaos and leaves his business in ruins. Undaunted, Lucky channels his adversity into a noble venture, creating the “Hillbrow People’s Housing Trust,” aimed at offering affordable housing solutions to the community.
As Kunene expands his influence, he earns the moniker “The Hoodlum of Hillbrow,” gaining respect and admiration from those around him. However, lurking in the shadows is Detective Blakkie Swart, who diligently gathers incriminating evidence against him, poised for a confrontation that could change everything for Kunene.
An unexpected encounter with Leah Friedlander, a white South African woman, sets the wheels of fate in motion for Kunene. When he heroically rescues her brother from the clutches of drug dealers, a profound connection develops, leading them to purchase a home together in the suburbs.
As Lucky’s success soars, he faces the rising threat of Tony Ngu, a ruthless drug dealer intent on undermining Kunene’s achievements. Complications arise with Nazareth, who has now integrated into Kunene’s housing trust, adding layers of conflict. Meanwhile, Swart’s meticulous investigation tightens around Kunene, elevating the stakes as Lucky’s empire hangs by a thread.
The tension escalates when Ngu’s defiance culminates in a sinister act, luring Leah’s brother into a trap under the cover of darkness. Unfortunately, Lucky discovers his victim’s lifeless body, leading him into a deep turmoil as he contemplates revenge against Ngu.
In a fleeting moment of reflection with Zakes, their dark intentions are quickly overshadowed by tragedy when Zakes is struck down in a drive-by shooting. Consumed by rage, Lucky galvanizes his crew to storm a local strip club where Ngu revels. What ensues is a violent confrontation, culminating in the death of Nazareth and serious injuries for Lucky himself.
In the aftermath, a relentless Lucky chases Ngu, who seeks refuge on the club’s rooftop. With tears in his eyes, Ngu pleads for mercy, promising to do anything to avoid death. Yet, Lucky remains unforgiving. As he confronts Ngu with the haunting question of whether he can bring Zakes back to life, he ultimately delivers a fatal shot, sending Ngu plummeting from the rooftop.
The narrative poignantly comes full circle with Lucky once again lying in a hospital bed, his body battered and his spirit stained with guilt and sorrow.
In a chilling epilogue, Kunene masterminds his escape from prison through a cunning ruse of feigning illness.
