Plot Summary

As the Newcastle-born gangster Jack Carter delves into the dangerous realm of London’s criminal underworld, he becomes ensnared in a tangled web of loyalty, deceit, and revenge. Complicating matters is his affair with Gerald’s girlfriend, Anna, which puts him at odds with more than just societal norms. With plans to escape to South America, Jack first must return to his roots in Newcastle and Gateshead to pay his final respects at the funeral of his brother, Frank. Frank’s tragic, untimely death in what was reported as a drink-driving accident leaves behind a trail of unanswered questions and suspicions.

As Jack begins to investigate the circumstances of his brother’s death, he encounters a host of characters who seem more inclined to guard their secrets than to share the truth. Among them is the elusive Margaret, whose reluctance to reveal details only heightens Jack’s determination. He also crosses paths with enigmatic figures who lurk just out of sight, deepening the mystery rather than clarifying it.

Jack’s quest leads him back to the familiar haunts of his youth, particularly the Newcastle Racecourse, where he attempts to reconnect with an old acquaintance, Albert Swift. However, Albert proves to be tight-lipped, unwilling to divulge any incriminating information that could jeopardize himself or others.

Refusing to back down, Jack doggedly pursues the clues scattered throughout London’s seedy underbelly, encountered through tough confrontations and clandestine meetings. His journey brings him to Cyril Kinnear’s estate, the seat of a crime boss wrapped in luxury and danger, and the alluring yet mysterious Glenda, who finds herself unwittingly caught up in these dangerous intrigues.

Jack’s pursuit of truth morphs into a treacherous adventure where he faces off against henchmen intent on driving him out of town. When he discovers that his London associates have been dispatched by the Fletchers to retrieve him, he must rely on all of his cunning and resourcefulness to evade capture.

Fueled by an unwavering quest for justice and an insatiable drive to unveil the truth regarding his brother’s untimely end, Jack finds his world shattered when he stumbles upon a disturbing pornography film at Glenda’s flat. This shocking discovery, showcasing Doreen alongside Glenda and Margaret, ignites a wrath within him that forces him to submerge Glenda’s head underwater in a moment of fury. When she reveals that the film belongs to Kinnear, and that Doreen was likely coerced into participating, Jack’s emotions ignite into a blazing rage.

With vengeance on his mind, he forces Glenda into her car boot and embarks on a mission to corner Albert. It is here that he extracts a pivotal confession: Albert had told Brumby that Doreen was Frank’s daughter, which instigated Kinnear to influence Frank to go to the police about Eric. This explosive revelation leads to a violent confrontation where Jack fatally stabs Albert, only to find himself ambushed by London gangsters, including Eric, resulting in a tense shootout that claims Peter’s life at Jack’s hands.

Once the dust settles, Jack tracks down Brumby and mercilessly beats him to death. In a desperate act, he sends the incriminating film to Scotland Yard’s vice squad, creating a whirlwind of repercussions. Now, with Margaret alongside him, Jack engages in a high-stakes negotiation with Kinnear over the phone, agreeing to remain silent in exchange for Eric’s surrender. Yet, Kinnear’s soon-initiated chain of events spirals into chaos.

Jack seizes the opportunity by abducting Margaret and leads her to Kinnear’s lavish estate, where he administers a fatal injection without a hint of remorse—casting her lifeless body aside. He then summons law enforcement to initiate a raid during Kinnear’s rambunctious party, setting in motion a series of events that feel like a dark, twisted puzzle. Jack relentlessly hunts for Eric along a desolate beach, pushing him into a reenactment of the whisky-soaked humiliation inflicted upon Frank before delivering his vengeance with a brutal shotgun beating.

With his vengeance against Frank’s tragic fate and Doreen finally realized, Jack walks alone along the shore, completely oblivious to the lurking danger. It isn’t long until Kinnear’s associate strikes from a distance, marking an ominous end to Jack’s relentless pursuit of justice.
