At the Bureau of National Security, Special Agent Alex Scott (Owen Wilson) finds himself in a tense encounter with his rival, Carlos (played by Gary Cole), just before receiving his mission briefing. Tasked with recovering the stolen “Switchblade,” a cutting-edge fighter plane that is invisible to both radar and the human eye, Scott learns that it has fallen into the hands of arms dealer Arnold Gundars (portrayed by Malcolm McDowell). To complicate matters, Gundars is using an upcoming boxing match involving Middleweight world champion Kelly Robinson (Eddie Murphy) to auction off this high-tech aircraft.
In a clever turn of events, the agency recruits Robinson to serve as Scott’s civil cover for the operation. The two soon head to Budapest, where Scott aims to infiltrate Gundars’ compound during a lavish party just prior to the much-anticipated fight. Tensions arise from the outset, as Robinson sees Scott merely as a new addition to his entourage. Although skeptical of Scott’s elaborate infiltration plan, Robinson is persuaded when Scott demonstrates his flying skills, allowing him to utilize a pair of special contacts that enable Robinson to see through Scott’s eyes.
Things take a chaotic turn in Budapest when Robinson is abducted after being sidetracked by a captivating local woman named Rachel Wright (Famke Janssen). Scott heroically intervenes, rescuing Robinson and revealing that the entire scenario was a strategic test; the woman was actually a fellow BNS agent and the object of Scott’s affection. During Gundars’ extravagant party, Robinson cleverly swaps Gundars’ pen with a duplicate that contains a tracking device, setting the stage for a confrontation in the private boxing ring.
Scott, meanwhile, poses as a member of Robinson’s team, using the distraction to infiltrate Gundars’ office and access valuable information. However, when Robinson inadvertently triggers an alarm, the duo is forced into a frantic escape that is further complicated by faulty equipment. Their chase through the iconic streets of Budapest culminates in a narrow escape down a sewer system.
Back at headquarters, Robinson takes it upon himself to coach Scott on how to win over Agent Wright’s heart, even going so far as to feed him romantic lines from Marvin Gaye’s classic, “Sexual Healing.” Scott manages to impress Wright, only to be sidetracked when they pick up unusual movement on the pen tracking device, leading him to believe Gundars’ next move is at a bathhouse—a location Scott initially dismisses as a dead end. In a surprising twist, Robinson’s instincts prove right, and their mission leads to an explosive showdown with Gundars’s men.
The stakes rise dramatically as Gundars speeds off with Wright in pursuit, and a shocking explosion leads to tragedy, causing Scott to mistakenly blame Robinson for Wright’s presumed demise. A heated public altercation ensues, resulting in Robinson’s arrest, but Scott persuades the agency that the mission must go on. He then locates Gundars once more, while Robinson manages to clear his name just in time for his next match, albeit with a surprisingly serious demeanor that unsettles his team.
On a towering bridge, Scott confronts Gundars, who is entangled with terrorists preparing to arm the Switchblade with a nuclear missile. In a nail-biting moment, Scott triumphs over the armed men, only to be caught off guard by the reappearance of the seemingly treacherous Agent Wright, who reveals her double agent status as she interrogates Scott for the activation codes.
As chaos unfolds, Scott activates the contact lens system, allowing Robinson to visualize Scott’s dire situation while he fights in the ring. Remarkably, Robinson pulls himself together, emerging victorious against his opponent, before rushing to the bridge to assist Scott. A violent melee ensues, resulting in the demise of many terrorists, with some even taken out by Carlos, who drops in to provide unexpected backup.
The tension escalates when Robinson confronts Carlos, leading to a definitive showdown that captures the chaotic nature of the operation. Amid the ensuing chaos, Wright fabricates a story to exonerate herself while secretly absconding with a briefcase filled with invaluable information that could sway the balance of power.
In a desperate bid, Scott and Robinson attempt to commandeer the Switchblade, but their plans flop as the aircraft goes down into the river moments after takeoff, where Robinson makes a chilling discovery of a nuclear weapon. Despite the intense setbacks, Scott realizes that their mission was not in vain, and Robinson resolves to be regarded as a true hero.
Fast forward 36 hours, Monte Carlo becomes the backdrop for the duo’s gripping pursuit of Agent Wright, ultimately leading to her arrest. As they relish in the moment of triumph, Scott uncovers a newspaper that reveals Carlos basking in the glory of their accomplishments, sharing the spotlight with President Bush. This revelation hits Robinson hard, setting the stage for tension between him and Scott as they prepare for their next move.
