Wing Chun master Ip Man and his family make a bold move to Hong Kong in 1949, having successfully escaped the oppressive grasp of Japanese-occupied Foshan. Striving to survive in the harsh economic climate of 1950, Ip sets his sights on opening a school, hoping to share his martial art while providing for his family. However, he faces a daunting challenge; his absence from the local fighting scene leaves him struggling to attract students, as he lacks a notable reputation in the vibrant yet competitive city.

One fateful day, a young man by the name of Wong Shun Leung appears on the scene, swiftly challenging Ip to a duel that ends in a decisive defeat for him. Unperturbed, Wong gathers a group of his friends and returns for revenge, but the outcome remains unchanged as they are easily bested by Ip’s exceptional skills. Impressed by his prowess and now enlightened about the depth of Ip’s technique, Wong and his friends come to realize the potential of this master and quickly become his first disciples. With this new founding crew, Ip’s school begins to flourish, ushering in a wave of eager students eager to learn.

Later that evening, while traversing the bustling market to procure supplies for dinner, Ip witnesses a troubling scene unfold. Shop owners desperately attempt to prevent a man from stealing their goods. Upon closer inspection, he recognizes the perpetrator as his old friend, Chow Ching-chuen. Stepping in to help, Ip pays for the stolen items, but to his dismay, Chow does not recognize him anymore. Painfully, Chow’s son, Yau, reveals the harsh truth that the once vibrant and capable Chow now suffers from a mental impairment due to the traumatic experience of being shot by Japanese soldiers while helping Ip to escape previously.

As days turn into weeks, Ip faces a new challenge when Wong is confronted by a group of rowdy students from the Hung Ga school while promoting Ip’s newly established academy. One of these students, Kei, engages Wong in a test of skills but quickly comes up short. Incensed by this defeat, his friends grab Wong and take him hostage, demanding that Ip pay a ransom for his student’s safe return. Ip bravely heads to the assigned location at the said local wet market; however, what starts off as a negotiation takes a turn for the violent when a horde of Hung Ga students appears. Just as all hope seems lost in the chaos, Jin Shanzhao, a former adversary of Ip’s, makes a much-needed entrance with his own crew, intervening to rescue both Ip and Wong from overwhelming odds.

The next stage of the conflict involves the coalition’s leader, Hung Chun-nam, who arrives on the scene to restore order. After a brief introduction, Hung explains the necessity for Ip to prove himself through a ceremony before setting up his school. Subsequently, Ip, Wong, and Jin find themselves in custody under Fatso, a Chinese detective from the RHKPF, for causing a public disturbance, only to be released shortly after on bail. Behind the scenes, Hung and Fatso confer with the corrupt British officer, Superintendent Wallace, to discuss the collection of protection fees from local martial arts schools.

Attending the awaited ceremony, we witness Ip’s unmatched skills as he skillfully defeats his initial two challengers with ease, leading up to a climactic showdown against Hung that ends in a draw. Although Ip is granted permission to continue teaching, he staunchly refuses to pay the protection money, inciting anger from Hung, who resorts to using intimidation tactics against Ip’s students, resulting in street fights that tarnish the peace. Forced to vacate the premises of his establishment by his landlady due to the escalating tensions, Ip takes it upon himself to train his disciples in the local park, showcasing his dedication to his craft and his pupils.

Tensions escalate further as Ip confronts Hung, who places the blame for their troubles squarely on Ip’s refusal to pay up. Their heated exchange prompts Ip to criticize Hung’s leadership over his students and submissive attitude towards the foreigners. In a poignant moment, as Hung’s son innocently wanders into harm’s way, Ip intervenes expertly, advising Hung to prioritize family over conflict, which earns him unexpected respect from the rival teacher. The next day, as a gesture of goodwill, Hung presents Ip and his students with tickets to an upcoming martial arts exhibition organized by Wallace and Fatso.

At the exhibition, various schools showcase their disciplines while celebrating the rich heritage of Chinese culture. The atmosphere quickly shifts, however, when Wallace’s guest, the famed boxer Taylor “The Twister” Miller, disrespects the martial arts students and instigates a brawl that the masters strive to quench. Hung, fueled by indignation, demands an apology, which leads to a high-stakes challenge—a duel with Twister. Initially, Hung demonstrates remarkable finesse, but he soon finds himself at a disadvantage against the vigorous, relentless boxer, who proves too powerful for Hung’s aged technique.

Despite efforts from Ip to convince Hung to concede, the proud master refuses to relent, and tragically, an asthma attack culminates in his devastating defeat. News of Hung’s tragic death ignites outrage among the Chinese community, with repercussions for Wallace as his superiors hold him accountable for his misconduct. In retaliation, Wallace arrests and tortures Ip’s friend Leung Kan, the newspaper editor, for daring to publish the grim news. Fortunately, Fatso steps in, securing Leung’s release without charges.

When a press conference unfolds, we see Wallace spin the narrative around Hung’s death, declaring it an accident while Twister issues an open challenge to any Chinese fighter. Ip, fueled by a sense of duty and honor, steps forward to accept this challenge just as he learns that his wife is going into labor. As the match day arrives, Ip finds himself at a substantial disadvantage against the unfamiliar Western boxing style, getting knocked down multiple times, but he begins to evolve his strategy—utilizing his signature Wing Chun techniques and his remarkable speed to level the playing field.

As the fight intensifies, corrupt schemes surface as Wallace and his accomplices attempt to rig the outcome against Ip. However, drawing on the wisdom imparted by Hung, Ip shifts his focus, targeting Twister’s limbs and ultimately conquering him with a flurry of strikes. As Twister falls into unconsciousness, jubilation erupts throughout the crowd, celebrating Ip’s triumph over adversity and asserting the strength of their culture.

In the aftermath, Wallace faces the music for his actions, facing arrest for his misdeeds, orchestrated by Fatso, who plays a pivotal role in delivering justice. Ip addresses the applauding audience with a heartfelt message urging harmony and mutual respect across cultural divides. The excitement culminates in a standing ovation, with the line between East and West blurring in the spirit of camaraderie, leaving Twister’s disgruntled manager to storm out in disgraced silence.

Returning home, Ip finally meets his newborn son, Ip Ching, bringing a sense of closure to his monumental journey. In a touching reminiscence of that same spirit of martial excellence, Yau introduces Ip to a spirited young boy named Bruce Lee, eager to learn Wing Chun for his own aspirations of empowerment—a sight that brings a warm smile to Ip’s face as he playfully encourages the boy to return when he has grown up.
