As Bob the Tomato and Dad Asparagus embark on a winding journey with a van overflowing with sprightly young veggies heading to a Twippo concert, tensions begin to simmer just beneath the surface. Laura’s exuberant boasts about her backstage pass serve only to infuriate Junior, whose dreams of getting an up-close experience quickly fizzle out when chaos strikes; a wayward guitar unexpectedly knocks Bob on the head. Their luck takes a further nosedive when the van’s tires are punctured by a determined porcupine’s quilled assault, sending them hurtling down a hill towards what seems like certain doom in the water below.
Meanwhile, at a nearby eatery, the shaken veggie crew gathers to bemoan their misfortunes. Bob points fingers at Dad Asparagus, while Junior and Laura engage in a fiery argument about the lost pass. In the midst of their squabbles, The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything step in, bestowing sage advice upon Junior, urging him to reconsider his harsh treatment of Laura. They share a gripping tale of Jonah, a prophet from ancient Israel, whose reluctance to deliver God’s message to the Ninevites spirals him into a series of reckless decisions.
Once a devoted servant of the Lord, Jonah finds himself at odds with divine orders when asked to preach repentance to the unruly Ninevites. Instead of obeying, he attempts to escape by booking passage on a ship bound for Tarshish, in the company of none other than The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything. While Jonah dozes below deck, his guilty conscience awakens him to the reality of his situation, where he encounters Khalil, a caterpillar bearing his own burdens.
A frightful nightmare shakes Jonah awake, plunging him into chaos as a tempest assails their ship. Captain Pa Grape deduces that someone onboard has drawn God’s fury, leading to a game of Go Fish to identify the culprit. Jonah, unfortunately, ends up as the loser and is unceremoniously cast overboard, only for the skies to miraculously clear in his absence. Despite the pirates’ brave attempts to rescue him, he is swallowed by a massive whale. In a comical twist, the pirates unleash a cannon firing bowling balls at the whale, resulting in Jonah’s lifebelt being expelled and the beast disappearing into the ocean’s depths.
As Jonah confronts the dark, uncertain world inside the whale, he realizes the error of his ways, prompted by Khalil’s presence. Expecting his end, Jonah is instead greeted by a divine entourage who open his eyes to the possibility of redemption. After three days and nights of reflection in the whale’s belly, Jonah, alongside Khalil, emerges onto the shores of Nineveh, where they hop onto Reginald, Jonah’s loyal camel, and set off towards the city.
Upon arriving, though met with some resistance at the gates, the Pirates stumble upon a stroke of fortune: their unexpected victory in Mr. Twisty’s Twisted Cheese Curls sweepstakes grants them entry into Nineveh, the very heart of culinary mischief. However, their joy is fleeting as Larry’s playful antics in snatching some Cheese Curls, thinking they were free samples, lead them straight to a death sentence. As their final request, Jonah is granted an audience with King Twistomer, where he delivers the divine warning about impending destruction unless the Ninevites repent. His earnest words touch the hearts of the people, who collectively decide to turn from their wicked ways.
Anticipating God’s wrath to befall Nineveh, Jonah retreats, watching from afar. Yet, rather than ruin, God delights in showing mercy, offering Jonah a moment of relief in the shape of a lush plant providing much-needed shade. However, Khalil, unaware of the plant’s significance, indulges in a single leaf, leading to its demise. This sets off a poignant exchange between the two, as Khalil implores Jonah to recognize God’s limitless compassion and love for all, including those outside of Israel. Despite this revelation, Jonah remains steadfast in his gloom, choosing despair over acceptance of God’s mercy. As Khalil and Reginald depart, leaving Jonah in solitude, the narrative takes a somber yet thought-provoking turn.
Returning to the present, the Veggies are left feeling dissatisfied by their journey’s rapid conclusion. However, as they ponder the story’s deeper meaning, they grasp the powerful lesson that compassion and mercy should be extended to all, without exception. In an unexpected twist, Twippo suddenly appears in the restaurant, offering the Veggies a ride to the concert, lifting their spirits. Meanwhile, Bob extends his forgiveness toward Dad Asparagus, signifying significant reconciliation. In a heartfelt moment, Junior selflessly surrenders his coveted Twippo ticket to Laura, showcasing the true essence of kindness and generosity. The film culminates in an electrifying musical number, with the Veggies soaring in jubilance. Just as everything seems perfect, reality crashes back as Khalil, now revealed as the tow truck driver, arrives to retrieve his immobilized vehicle, reminding everyone of the balance between joy and reality.
