Deep within the tranquil yet menacing Canadian wilderness, an unnamed woman, known as Momma and played by Halle Berry, resides in isolation with her twin sons, Samuel, portrayed by Anthony B. Jenkins, and Nolan, acted by Percy Daggs IV. Their existence is dictated by ropes that tether them to their home, creating an unnerving atmosphere. Momma has instilled a profound fear of a malevolent entity referred to as The Evil, claiming it has devastated their world and taken away their father and grandparents. Straying beyond the confines of their ropes, she warns, would spell disaster.

The Evil manifests as a ghostly version of Momma’s own deceased mother, haunting her with a serpentine tongue, an apparition only she can perceive. The boys have never encountered this threat directly, spending their days in the wilderness hunting small creatures with crudely fashioned traps. However, one day, driven by a rebellious desire for eggs beyond the safety of their bindings, Nolan coerces Samuel into a forbidden excursion. In a fit of jealousy and misunderstanding, Nolan purposefully steps on Samuel’s rope, leading to a catastrophic fall that injures Samuel’s foot. In a panic, Samuel blows a whistle, drawing Momma’s attention as The Evil briefly manifests, resembling their grandmother before receding.

Momma tends to Samuel’s injury, her voice tinged with disappointment towards Nolan for his careless actions. She insists both boys touch the wooden floor and recite an ancient mantra believed to ward off dark forces. During a meager dinner, tension rises as Nolan accuses Samuel of favoritism toward their mother, a claim that Samuel fervently denies.

Momma, sensing the increasing discord, shares a haunting tale from her past about a young girl who perished while trapped in a gopher hole, a victim of Momma’s inaction. As the sun sets, The Evil reappears, adopting the guise of the boys’ deceased father, confronting Momma with a harrowing ultimatum: reveal the true nature of The Evil to her sons or face dire consequences.

Attempting to reconnect with her children through music, Momma plays an old record while they gather around a flickering fire, allowing themselves to momentarily forget their chilling reality. However, their hope quickly dissipates when their search for food prompts a devastating proposal—Momma suggests they should consume their beloved dog, Koda. While Samuel reluctantly agrees, Nolan passionately defies the notion, expressing his hatred for even the thought of such an act.

Driven by desperation, Momma tries to take Koda’s life with a crossbow but finds herself unable to carry out the deed. In a moment of perceived clarity, Nolan cuts Momma’s rope, hoping to expose what he believes is a mere figment of evil. Yet, this misguided act leads to terrifying consequences as The Evil envelops Momma, revealing that she had never been entirely truthful about its origins.

In an escalated frenzy, Momma ultimately ends her own life, leaving Samuel to discover her lifeless body, plunging him into a devastating grief. Without their mother, the brothers face starvation. As Samuel weakens, Nolan binds them together with their ropes and ventures into the forest, calling out for help. Their cries reach a hitchhiker named Cole, played by Matthew Kevin Anderson, whose appearance seems like salvation but quickly sours when Samuel, wielding a crossbow, confronts him in a moment of panic.

Nolan witnesses Cole desperately attempting to escape but is struck down before he can flee. As Nolan retrieves food from Cole’s bag, he shares it with his ailing brother, leading to a flicker of strength returning to Samuel. In a moment fraught with despair, Samuel ventures into the shed, seeking comfort from their mother’s memory, only to confront the grim reality of her decaying corpse.

A young girl, introduced as Cole’s Daughter by Cadence Compton, appears in the woods, waiting for her father. Samuel’s attempt to deny Cole’s identity collapses when the flashlight he carries betrays him as the girl vanishes into the trees. Compelled by a frightening urge, Samuel pursues her—only to find himself ensnared by his own rope, where she transforms into a grotesque spider-like creature that corrupts him from within.

Nolan, realizing his brother is overtaken by The Evil, tries to rescue him. However, Samuel, now under the dark influence, betrays Nolan and sets their home ablaze, savoring the destruction. Nolan narrowly escapes, confronting The Evil, which takes on a version of Momma as a cruel trick. Yet, Nolan, fueled by love, drags the entity into the cellar, and with a surge of maternal love, he shatters its façade, revealing its terrifying true form.

As firefighters uncover Nolan alive in the rubble, Samuel is also pulled from the ashes, while Koda chases after a departing rescue helicopter. A haunting photograph taken by Samuel captures The Evil’s lingering presence—a dark hand resting on his shoulder, signifying an unshakeable bond. Although Nolan reassures Samuel that they are finally free from darkness, Samuel’s chilling whisper, “She loves me more,” suggests that the malevolent grip of The Evil may never truly disappear.
