Melanie is your typical single mother, juggling a myriad of responsibilities, from paying the bills to making dinner, tucking her son Sammy into bed, and getting ready for another bustling day at work. Exhausted, she finally lays down, but her peaceful moment is interrupted when Sammy wakes up with excitement about a field trip planned for the next day and the fact that his father will be attending his soccer game later that evening.

Melanie Parker, portrayed by Michelle Pfeiffer, is not just any mom; she is also a dedicated architect navigating the challenges of life after divorce. Her morning begins on a chaotic note when she finds herself late in dropping off Sammy (played by Alex D. Linz) at school, all thanks to Jack Taylor, a fellow single parent. Jack, depicted by George Clooney, is a New York Daily News reporter who is unexpectedly left in charge of his daughter Maggie (played by Mae Whitman) that morning, due to his ex-wife Kristen (Sheila Kelley) having to leave for her honeymoon. Kristen, having left on such short notice, specifically instructed Jack to ensure Maggie arrived at Melanie’s by 8 AM to catch the bus to school. However, Jack’s forgetfulness leads both families into a slew of complications, as Melanie waits impatiently, only to realize she’s now late herself.

As they scramble through the morning, the children arrive just moments too late to partake in the much-anticipated school field trip. In a desperate attempt to salvage the day, they try to catch a taxi to the pier but subsequently miss the ferry as well.
