As T.J. Detweiler eagerly awaits a carefree summer filled with fun and mischief alongside his friends, his enthusiasm takes a turn for the worse. A group of men driven by sinister motives stealthily infiltrates the Third Street School, stealing sensitive projects and transforming the campus into their secret operation base. Unbeknownst to T.J., this covert endeavor heralds a summer that will put his courage to the ultimate test.

Feeling disheartened as his summer plans are dashed, T.J. embarks on a quest to investigate the peculiar happenings at school. However, he is met with skepticism from his parents and the authorities. Undaunted, T.J. seeks help from Principal Prickly (/actor/principal-prickly), who appears blissfully unaware of the chaos unfolding around him. Everything escalates when Prickly mysteriously vanishes upon nearing the school building, leaving T.J. feeling more isolated than ever.

In a desperate attempt to reclaim his summer and rally his friends, T.J. persuades his older sister Becky to drive him to various summer camps for the purpose of gathering his companions. Upon returning to Third Street School, they are initially misled by the discovery of trivial documents. However, they are jolted into the staggering reality when a colossal laser shoots up from the school’s rooftop.

As the group devises a strategy to juggle camp activities with late-night meetings, T.J. confirms his suspicions regarding Prickly’s disappearance. With his newfound insights, they venture into the school to rescue their beloved principal. Meanwhile, Randall Weems (/actor/randall-weems) covertly informs Muriel Finster of the gang’s clandestine operations.

Upon entering the auditorium, which has been converted into a laboratory, T.J. and his friends are greeted by a harrowing scene: rows of machinery and scientists diligently occupied amid a clutter of beakers and test tubes. When T.J. is apprehended by guards, his friends narrowly escape, only to be captured and imprisoned alongside Prickly.

As they maneuver through this treacherous scenario, the group learns that Prickly’s old associate Dr. Phillium Benedict is the mastermind behind the school’s takeover. Prickly shares a tale of betrayal from the past: in 1968, while completing their teaching training, he, Benedict, and Finster faced a pivotal moment. Benedict’s scheme to abolish recess for better test scores prompted Prickly to involve the superintendent, resulting in Benedict’s dismissal and Prickly’s ascension to principal, which ultimately led to Finster ending her relationship with him. Fueled by resentment, Benedict pursued a political career, ultimately becoming the Secretary of Education—until he was ousted by the President for attempting to eliminate recess nationwide.

As Spinelli reviews the recovered papers, she unexpectedly discovers a cryptic mention of “lunar perigee,” triggering a series of revelations. Gretchen’s keen intellect quickly connects the dots, leading her to inform the group of Benedict’s malicious plan: he intends to use a tractor beam to manipulate the moon’s path, potentially triggering a lasting ice age that would obliterate summer break forever. Meanwhile, T.J. and Prickly work to expose Benedict’s sinister design for global control, aiming to keep children indoors all year long.

With the gravity of the threat weighing heavily upon them, T.J.’s friends spring into action, convincing Becky to drive them to the camps and summon all students. Finster rallies the teachers, while Gus devises a covert plan to penetrate the school. The stage is set for an epic confrontation as Benedict gears up to unleash his malevolent scheme during the school assembly.

In the ensuing chaos, students and staff of Third Street School unite against Benedict’s henchmen in a wild showdown. As tensions rise, Benedict attempts to manually enact the beam but is interrupted by Prickly, who acts to prevent the catastrophe. In a desperate move, the villain breaks the control mechanism, but T.J. steps forward, directing Vince to hurl a baseball at the beam, resulting in its destruction.

Benedict’s diabolical plot is thwarted, and law enforcement arrives to arrest him and his accomplices. In the aftermath, T.J.’s friends decide to savor their remaining summer days together, relishing the freedom they so narrowly fought to retain.

In a heartwarming moment, T.J. expresses his gratitude to Prickly for guiding him through the ordeal. The principal, in turn, appreciates the reminder of his purpose in education: to significantly shape the lives of young people. As the narrative reaches its conclusion, T.J. rejoins his friends, with Prickly playfully cautioning him about the inevitable consequences he’ll face come September for his earlier antics.
