Sisters Cath and Nic, along with friends Jodie and Lisa, set out for an adventurous day of diving and spearfishing. However, their day takes a dark turn when Cath’s abusive husband, Greg, comes to take her home after their outing. Later that evening, Nic receives a frantic text from Cath, leading her to rush to Cath’s house, only to discover the horrific sight of Cath’s lifeless body submerged in the bathtub. Greg dangerously claims that Cath “made him do it,” forever marking the beginning of a chilling aftermath.
Fast forward nine months, and Nic returns from India ready to reconnect with Jodie, Lisa, and Annie (the younger sister of Nic and Cath) at a rented cabin on a nearby island. After catching up and celebrating their long-awaited reunion, the friends embark on a kayaking trip the following day. During their excursion, Annie senses something amiss and catches a glimpse of a shark’s dorsal fin slicing through the water. The situation turns dire as Annie is violently tipped over by a massive great white shark, managing to scramble back onto her kayak. In a desperate attempt to save her, Lisa turns around but tragically, the shark strikes her down.
Reeling from the horror, the remaining three women paddle back to shore only to witness a young girl named Demi, playing with her friend Winston, sustain a shark bite but survive. Realizing the urgency for medical assistance, Nic, Jodie, and Annie decide to navigate to the nearest island. The children’s mothers anxiously wait on the shore as the three women struggle to stabilize an old fishing motorboat, tying a kayak on either side. As they set off across the water, things take a turn for the worse when the boat starts taking in water and the motor unexpectedly fails, all while being stalked by the relentless shark.
Tensions rise when Nic and Annie confront each other over Nic’s absence after Cath’s tragic demise. The tension erupts as the shark resurfaces and captures Annie in its grasp, though, against all odds, she manages to evade being dragged under. In a heartfelt exchange, Nic apologizes for her absence and reveals her struggle with guilt over Cath’s death, admitting she had sensed something was wrong in Cath’s relationship with Greg. Annie, with a heartwarming understanding, forgives Nic, and as the shark reappears, they realize they must confront their predator head-on rather than flee.
Devising a plan to trap the shark, the women utilize a fish Jodie had caught earlier as bait, attaching it to the boat’s anchor in hopes of ensnaring the beast. Initially, their strategy seems successful but the shark breaks free and attacks once more. However, when the women ensnare the shark in a fishing net, everything reaches a boiling point. Annie becomes tangled in the net, prompting Nic to leap into the fray and stab the shark multiple times. Finally triumphant, the three women press on towards the island.
In the aftermath, Annie, Jodie, and Nic stroll along the beach, stopping at a plaque that honors Cath and Lisa with the inscription “dive sisters forever.” The emotional moment deepens when they receive a video call from a fully recovered Demi. They commemorate their lost friends by leaving flowers, a shell necklace, and the original selfie taken at the film’s start, encapsulating the deep bonds and memories they shared.
