As night descends upon the Central Park Zoo, the charming Samson, a regal lion, entertains his teenage son Ryan with exhilarating stories of his adventures in the wilds of Africa. Enthralled by his father’s daring tales, Ryan dreams of emulating Samson’s bravery and longs to master the art of roaring just like him. However, the cautious patriarch firmly believes that such aspirations are exceedingly dangerous.
When the zoo’s gates shut, the animals find themselves with the freedom to explore. Samson and his eclectic group of friends—including Benny, the clever squirrel; Bridget, the graceful giraffe who captures Benny’s affections; Larry, the endearing yet clumsy anaconda; and Nigel, the charming but hapless koala—engage in a lively turtle curling competition. However, the excitement quickly turns to chaos when Ryan and his pals unwittingly set off a stampede, threatening the entire zoo.
As tensions rise between father and son, they confront a painful rift, culminating in Ryan’s impulsive escape before Samson has a chance to make amends. Disregarding the potential consequences, Ryan sneaks into a shipping container destined for the wilderness, only to discover he is trapped onboard as it’s loaded onto a truck and driven away.
Determined to rescue his son, Samson teams up with a clever pigeon named Hamir and his band of friends. They hop into a garbage truck for their daring mission but face further misfortune when Benny accidentally tumbles into the refuse. Battling through the bustling streets of Times Square, they barely evade disaster as they navigate the dangers of the city, before encountering a pack of fierce dogs. In a desperate bid for safety, Samson dashes toward the sewer, seeking refuge from their pursuers.
In their underground adventure, they enlist the help of two savvy alligator brothers, Stan and Carmine, who assist them with directions to the docks. As day breaks, the group commandeers a tugboat in a frantic attempt to rescue Ryan, ultimately reuniting with Benny, who has been tracking their whereabouts with a gaggle of geese. As they head toward the ship where Ryan is being held, Samson takes the wheel, harnessing Larry’s guidance amidst the turmoil, while the geese steer them in the right direction.
However, the chaos intensifies when nearby animals are forced to evacuate due to an impending volcanic eruption. In an unexpected twist, Ryan ventures into the thick jungle, spurring Samson’s relentless search that, alas, yields no results. While his companions make their way back, Samson remains steadfast in his commitment to find his missing son. Amidst this turmoil, he begins to feel deep connections with the primal instincts within him, hinting at a larger guidance steering him forward.
Amidst the turmoil, Nigel finds himself taken by a herd of wildebeest, led by the ominous Kazar, who mistakenly anoints him as “The Great Him” due to an ancient prophecy. In Kazar’s eyes, Nigel possesses the power to alter the food chain—a change that would require the wildebeest to consume a lion, thereby rewriting the natural order.
As Samson continues his search for Ryan, he uncovers Bridget and Larry held captive by the wildebeest. Unbeknownst to him, Ryan is hiding within a towering tree, just as a gang of vultures, acting under Kazar’s orders, attacks. Ryan’s desperate cries for help reach Samson, who rushes to his son’s side, scaring away the vultures.
Reunited, Samson shares the truth about his own complicated history—his birth in a circus and a struggle with his inability to roar—mirroring Ryan’s own challenges. The moment is cut short as the wildebeest close in, forcing them to flee. In a twist of fate, the wildebeest uproot the tree, causing it to tumble down a cliff while Ryan is taken away by Kazar.
With the sage advice of Benny fueling his self-acceptance, Samson learns the cunning guidance he felt was instinct was indeed orchestrated by two devious chameleons, Cloak and Camo. Their goal? To leverage Samson’s might against Kazar’s forces. Although Samson initially sneaks past the volcano’s defenses, intense heat lays bare his disguise, triggering an attack from Kazar’s minions.
In a climactic moment, Ryan bravely uses a catapult to confront Kazar with a roar of defiance. The diversion allows Samson to gain the upper hand, culminating in a powerful reunion where Ryan expresses his gratitude for having Samson as a father. The other wildebeest, inspired by their newfound perspective, turn against Kazar’s reign.
As Kazar is momentarily incapacitated, Samson unleashes a resounding roar, enough to propel Kazar into the very mouth of the erupting volcano. With peace restored, the animal companions make their way back to their cherished home in Central Park Zoo, embarking on a new chapter of their lives filled with adventures as they once again settle into the thrill of life on their beloved boat.
