As American traveler Neil (Ben Affleck) finds himself swept away in the captivating ambiance of the City of Light, he enters a whirlwind romance with the enigmatic Ukrainian divorcée Marina (Olga Kurylenko). Their adventure takes a memorable turn as they journey to the breathtaking Mont St. Michel, a stunning island abbey off the coast of Normandy. In a grand display of commitment, Neil extends an olive branch to Marina and her spirited ten-year-old daughter Tatiana (Tatiana Chiline), inviting them to start anew in his home state of Oklahoma. At first, their passion burns brightly, but as time passes, the flames begin to wane. In her quest for solace amid her crisis of faith, Marina turns to the gentle guidance of Father Quintana (Javier Bardem), who grapples with his own existential doubts. Meanwhile, Tatiana struggles with homesickness, longing for her previous life and expressing that Neil doesn’t feel like a real father to her. As tensions rise, Marina reveals the reality of her visa expiration, which forces her to consider returning to France with Tatiana.

After returning to Oklahoma, Neil reconnects with childhood friend Jane (Rachel McAdams), whose failing farm is burdened by debt from her ex-husband. As they revive their friendship, Neil finds himself developing feelings for Jane; however, his fear of commitment ultimately harms their potential relationship.

Back in France, Marina finds herself lost, yearning for the comfort she once had in Oklahoma while struggling to secure work after having returned Tatiana to her father. Meanwhile, Neil is torn between his lingering feelings for Marina and his increasing bond with Jane. Amidst all this uncertainty and heartache, Marina seeks distraction in a chance encounter with Charlie (Charles Baker), a charming carpenter who once gifted her a symbolic wind harp.

As the chaos of their past begins to settle, Marina confides in Neil about her infidelity at a fast-food drive-through, seeking his forgiveness. The emotional weight of her confession hits hard, prompting an enraged Neil to abandon her by the roadside. After a moment of reflection, he returns to collect her, setting in motion a frail attempt at reconciliation that will deeply test the fabric of their complex love story.
