Using a stolen laptop from a cybercafé’s lost and found, Matias O’Brien connects with his hearing-impaired girlfriend Amaya DeSoto through a Facebook call. During their conversation, he showcases his progress on a software program called Papaya, designed to convert speech into ASL videos. However, Amaya’s disappointment is palpable, as she wishes he would invest time in learning sign language to improve their communication. When their call is abruptly dropped, Matias struggles to reconnect with Amaya.
Meanwhile, Matias joins a webcam game night with his friends Damon Horton, AJ Williams, Lexx Putri, Serena Lange, and Serena’s girlfriend Nari Jemisin, all joining from their respective locations. As they indulge in a game of Cards Against Humanity, Matias juggles the task of reestablishing contact with Amaya while dismissing a series of odd messages from a Facebook account named ‘Norah C. IV.’
The night takes a joyful turn when Serena and Nari announce their engagement, though the celebration is dampened by the news of Serena’s mother’s cancer hospitalization. An unexpected tech glitch plagues Matias’ laptop, prompting Damon to suggest scanning for hidden files. This leads Matias to uncover a disturbing trove of videos sourced from hacked webcams and surveillance cameras.
Amaya finally calls back, and they discuss their relationship struggles. Eventually, Matias interacts with someone posing as ‘Erica Dunne’, who is actually the rightful owner of the laptop he’s hijacked. Matias admits to his actions and promises to return it. But just as he thinks he can wrap everything up, a message from ‘Charon 68’ beckons him to a secretive online domain known as ‘The River.’ In a moment of sheer realization, Matias discovers that this Charon refers to the mythological ferryman, and he learns that he inadvertently stole from ‘Charon 4.’ This realization dawns upon him when he notices ‘Norah C. IV’ is simply the reverse of Charon’s name. To his astonishment, he finds out that Charon 4 possesses a cryptocurrency stash of ten million dollars.
The tension escalates when Charon 68 asks Matias to craft a chilling video depicting another person’s death. In a panic, Matias shuts down the connection and investigates more files, leading to the shocking discovery of apparent snuff films featuring victims like Agatha and Samantha. As they watch a video of a woman being kidnapped, Matias’ heart races with fear and realization.
After he manages to re-establish communication, Amaya’s roommate Kelly becomes the new focal point when Charon 4 intrudes upon their feed, threatening Matias. Charon reveals that Kelly’s life hinges on Matias returning the laptop without warning Amaya, further manipulating the situation by demanding Matias lures Amaya to him.
In a desperate bid to maintain control, Matias concocts a tale for his friends about an immersive horror game. Despite numerous suspicions, he convinces them, even getting Amaya to come to his home as per Charon 4’s instructions. Yet as the plot unfolds, Matias discovers that Erica Dunne is genuinely missing.
With an ingenious plan, Matias siphons off Charon 4’s massive Bitcoin reserve as leverage for Erica’s safe return. Soon, however, The Circle begins to close in on Matias and his friends. As he pretends to be Charon 4 under pressure, Charon monitors every step, leading to deadly consequences. Heartbreaking choices unfold, revealing betrayals within the friendship as dear lives hang in the balance.
As the Circle realizes Matias’ trickery, chaos ensues. The fraying strings of trust unravel as Matias races against time to protect Amaya, while Charon’s twisted games lead to horrific outcomes. The tension escalates as they cruelly manipulate the situation, leading to the deaths of Serena’s mother, Nari, and eventually, Serena herself.
Trapped in a whirlwind of deception, Matias learns that The Circle toyed with them deliberately to create entertainment from their suffering. As they decide Matias’ fate through a horrific poll, he perceives the darkness that envelops him. The climax spirals into tragedy as Charon methodically destroys everything Matias holds dear, framing him for heinous acts he didn’t commit.
In an alternate ending, Matias’ desperate messages to Amaya go haywire as The Circle manipulates communication, leaving him buried alive, stripped of hope as Amaya unknowingly turns her back, sealing his fate. The chilling reality of survival ends with a haunting reminder: in this dark web of horror, they all became mere pawns in The Circle’s game.
