Plot Summary

Veteran engineer Frank Barnes (Denzel Washington) navigates the complexities of the Allegheny and West Virginia Railroad (AWVR) alongside his new co-worker, Will Colson (Chris Pine). During an assignment to pick up train cars just outside Stanton, Pennsylvania, Will mistakenly adds five extra cars. This oversight becomes crucial as they realize it only after leaving the yard. Despite Will’s urging to revert and uncouple the unnecessary cars, Frank persists northward on the main line, leading to unforeseen consequences.

Simultaneously, in the northern town of Fuller, AWVR hostlers Dewey (Ethan Suplee) and Gilleece (T.J. Miller) receive orders from dispatcher Bunny (Kevin Chapman) to relocate a freight train led by locomotive #777, affectionately known as “Triple Seven”. Dewey attempts to cut corners by leaving the air brake hoses unconnected for this brief journey. However, a miscalculation leads to a runaway situation, and Dewey is forced to notify yardmaster Connie Hooper (Rosario Dawson) that the train is out of control.

In a race against time, Connie manages to redirect an excursion train just moments before it could collide with the runaway. She coordinates efforts with the police and local sheriff to secure grade crossings, while Federal Railroad Administration inspector Scott Werner (Kevin Corrigan) warns of the dangers posed by the hazardous molten phenol in eight of the runaway’s cars. Ignoring Connie’s advice to derail the train in a safe area, AWVR vice-president Oscar Galvin (Kevin Dunn) insists they can stop it.

As the runaway train barrels through farmland, a catastrophic collision occurs, narrowly avoiding horses that had just been evacuated. In an attempt to regain control, a crew of veteran engineers is dispatched to catch up to the runaway, but their plans end in tragedy when their efforts go awry, leading to injuries and casualties.

Frank and Will, upon receiving alerts about the runaway, realize they must navigate a longer route to intercept the train. They just manage to reach a Repair-In-Place track in time, only to witness the runaway train crashing through their train’s last car. With determination, Frank devises a new plan, opting to unhook their locomotive and chase after 777.

Confronted with Galvin’s threats of termination, Frank stands firm, revealing he’s already been pushed into early retirement. Despite the risks, with encouragement from Connie and others, Frank and Will embark on a perilous mission to prevent disaster.

As the police react to new developments, they call off a dangerous plan to trigger a fuel cutoff switch due to potential hazards. Meanwhile, concerns mount that the runaway will derail in Stanton, endangering nearby fuel storage. With time running out, Frank and Will manage to catch up to the runaway. Despite injuries sustained during the chase, Will triumphantly leaps onto the runaway train to regain control.

Following a breathless pursuit marked by quick thinking and teamwork, Frank, Will, and their companion Ned (Lew Temple) are hailed as heroes. In the aftermath, Frank enjoys a well-deserved retirement while Will looks forward to growing his family, and Connie rises to fill Galvin’s former role. Their harrowing adventure becomes an inspiring story of courage and resilience as they all reunite, putting their dangerous ordeal behind them.
