A young Dutch boy named Michiel van Beusekom becomes involved in the Dutch resistance during World War II, determined to protect a British airman from the clutches of the Nazis in occupied Netherlands. Despite feeling frustrated with his father, the mayor, who seems more focused on keeping peace with the German authorities, Michiel idolizes his adventurous Uncle Ben, who maintains ties with the local resistance. As the harsh winter of 1944-1945 unfolds, Michiel’s loyalties are put to the ultimate test.
The story begins when an RAF de Havilland Mosquito aircraft is shot down, but a young British pilot, Jack, manages to escape by parachuting to safety. A villager named Dirk, the elder brother of Michiel’s close friend, assists Jack but is soon captured by the Germans. Before his arrest, Dirk entrusts Michiel with a letter intended for Bertus, the village blacksmith, but before Michiel can deliver it, Bertus is tragically killed by German troops.
Upon opening the letter, Michiel discovers directions to Jack’s hiding spot in the woods. Seeing that Jack has sustained injuries, he seeks help from his sister Erica, a nurse, who begins to care for him. An unexpected romance blooms between Jack and Erica, complicating matters further.
Things take a turn when Michiel’s father is arrested after a dead German soldier—killed by Jack during the crash incident—is found in the woods. Jack wishes to surrender to protect Michiel’s father, but Uncle Ben assures Michiel that he can negotiate his father’s release. However, Ben’s efforts prove futile, and Michiel’s father is executed alongside two others in retaliation for the soldier’s death.
Desperate to save Jack and his father, Michiel attempts to transport Jack to a contact in Zwolle by navigating through the German patrols. They manage a daring escape, but their situation becomes dire when Michiel finds Jack has disappeared from their hiding place, only to discover him in bed with Erica. Tensions rise as Ben warns Michiel about getting involved with Jack.
When Michiel uncovers evidence that Ben is actually working with the Germans, he rushes to confront the trio as they attempt to cross the river. While guarding Ben, Jack and Erica manage to escape across the water. As Ben tries to negotiate his way to safety, Michiel, fueled by betrayal and rage, ends up shooting him.
In the aftermath, as Allied forces arrive and bring hope to the beleaguered village, Michiel remains conflicted about the recent turmoil he’s faced. One of the soldiers delivers a letter for Erica, likely from Jack, and despite the heavy weight of all that has transpired, Michiel eventually finds himself swept up in the jubilant welcome for their liberators, caught between sorrow and the tentative promise of new beginnings.
