**Bernardo Bertolucci** (Italian: [berˈnardo bertoˈluttʃi]; 16 March 1941 – 26 November 2018) was an Italian film director and screenwriter. His career spanned over 50 years. Bertolucci was considered one of the greatest directors in Italian cinema and his work received international acclaim. His second film, _Before the Revolution (1964)_, has since gained classic status, being called a _masterpiece of Italian cinema_ by Film4. His 1970 film _The Conformist_ is considered a classic of international cinema. His later films such as _The Last Emperor_ (1987) was a critical and commercial success. Bertolucci's films often dealt with themes of politics, sexuality, history, class conflict and social taboos. He continued directing well into the 21st century, releasing his final film, _Me and You_, in 2012. Bertolucci's films have appeared on several lists of the greatest films of all time. Bertolucci was famously a Marxist and used his films to voice his political views. Bertolucci and his impact on cinema have been the subjects of significant historical and theoretical studies.
