Plot Summary

In the aftermath of his wife’s tragic passing, Paul, a hotel owner struggling to come to terms with his grief, embarks on an intense and tumultuous affair with Jeanne, a young Parisian woman engaged to be married. The two meet at a coveted apartment, where they initially maintain an air of anonymity, sharing only their physical intimacy without revealing their true identities. However, as their relationship deepens, Paul’s possessiveness and control issues begin to surface, culminating in a violent act that shatters the fragile bond between them. Despite this, Jeanne remains ensnared, unable to extricate herself from the toxic dynamic.

The affair continues, with Paul becoming increasingly demanding of Jeanne’s attention, but she eventually finds the strength to break free and reject him. However, when their paths cross again on the streets of Paris, Paul is relentless in his pursuit, regaling her with tales of his late wife and himself, hoping to rekindle their connection. As they enter a tango bar, Jeanne’s disillusionment with their relationship grows, and she finally asserts her boundaries, refusing to revisit the past.

Undeterred, Paul chases Jeanne through the winding streets of Paris, his persistence bordering on obsession. Despite her pleas for him to leave her alone, he continues to pursue her, ultimately forcing his way into her apartment. As Jeanne stands firm in her resolve, Paul reveals his true nature, mocking her for running away from their troubled relationship. In a final, desperate attempt to claim her attention, he professes his love and requests her name.

Jeanne’s world is shattered once more as she retrieves a gun from the drawer and fires, striking Paul mortally. As he collapses onto her balcony, Jeanne stands dazed, struggling to process the gravity of her actions. In a state of numbness, she rehearses the narrative that will explain her actions to the authorities, acknowledging that Paul was nothing more than a stranger who had sought to exploit and control her.
