Joanna Hogg

Joanna Hogg (born 20 March 1960) is a renowned British film director and screenwriter. Hogg made an impressive directorial and screenwriting start in 2007 with her feature film debut, Unrelated. She has subsequently gone on to direct several more films, including Archipelago (2010), Exhibition (2013), The Souvenir (2019), The Souvenir Part II (2021), and The Eternal Daughter (2022). Hogg's style, influenced by European and Asian directors such as Eric Rohmer and Yasujirō Ozu, employs extended takes and minimal camera movement. She has a distinctive approach of casting a mix of actors and non-professional actors in her films. Her depiction of middle-class characters has led some commentators to suggest her work is pioneering new social realism in British film.

In the late 1970s, after leaving school, Hogg worked as a photographer and ventured into making experimental super-8 films. She studied direction at the National Film and Television School after one of her films about a kinetic sculpture won her a place there. On graduation, Hogg directed several music videos and earned her first television commission writing and directing programme segments. New to the industry, she wanted to make a film doing everything she was told not to do in television and did exactly that with her debut feature, Unrelated. She followed this success with Archipelago, which had its UK premiere at the 2010 London Film Festival. Her film The Souvenir was a collaborative piece, with Martin Scorsese serving as an executive producer. In addition to directing, Hogg has also co-curated the exhibition of filmmaker Chantal Akerman's installation work, as part of the cinema collective A Nos Amours, which she founded with Adam Roberts.
