What's After the Movie
Karl Fredrik Lukas Moodysson, a versatile Swedish filmmaker, novelist, and short story writer, first witnessed prominence as an ambitious poet in the 1980s. His biggest domestic and international breakthrough came from directing the 1998 romantic film Show Me Love. Moodysson's directorial style, described as “heartfelt and uncompromising,” led him on a journey of directing various films with unique styles and public appeal. He ventured into different realms of cinema- romantic, experimental, narrative- and mastered each of them.
Moodysson found his spark in filmmaking while expressing through poetry as an outcast. He decided to move to film, intending his work to reach a broader audience. After directing three short films, he moved to features and gained immense success with Show Me Love. His subsequent films varied vastly in style and theme, from the cheerfully optimistic Together (Tillsammans) in 2000, the brutal Lilya 4-ever in 2002, to the experimental A Hole in My Heart (Ett hål i mitt hjärta) in 2004. His work took another turn with Mammoth, a narrative film, and his first English-language piece. Moodysson's 2013 film We are the Best! (Vi är bäst!), based on a comic book by his wife Coco, returned to his early themes and style. Moodysson's wide-range and remarkable creativity in filmmaking even expanded to television, with the TV series Gösta premiering in 2019 on HBO.
