Check out what happened in Lilya 4-Ever!

The cinematic journey begins with a solitary figure hurtling towards a motorway bridge, their desperate footsteps echoing through the desolate landscape. As they pause, the camera pans out to reveal the protagonist, Lilya Michailova (played by...), her youthful face bearing the scars of a brutal assault. The narrative then unwinds to expose the tumultuous tapestry of her past.

Lilya's existence is defined by hardship and neglect in a crumbling Soviet-era apartment complex, where she resides with her mother. Her mother's promise of a new life in America proves a cruel joke, as she abandons Lilya in the care of her aunt, forcing the young girl to adapt to a cramped, squalid environment. The once-nurturing aunt has since moved into their former home, leaving Lilya to suffer in silence.

A litany of indignities and hardships besets Lilya. Her closest friend, Natasha, encourages her to join the ranks of prostitutes, but Lilya's moral compass steers her clear of this fate. When a stash of cash is discovered on Natasha's person, she deceitfully claims it belongs to Lilya, forever tarnishing her reputation in the community and at school. This litany of humiliations culminates in a group of familiar faces turning violent, leaving Lilya vulnerable and powerless.

As Lilya navigates this treacherous landscape, she forms an unlikely bond with Volodya, a young boy tormented by his drunk father. Her kindness is met with cruelty when the father deliberately deflates her gift of a basketball with scissors. It is amidst this turmoil that she meets Andrei, a charismatic figure who promises a better life in Sweden, convincing her to leave her troubled past behind.

However, their arrival in Sweden proves a cruel illusion. Instead of solace and opportunity, Lilya finds herself ensnared by the nefarious Witek, a pimp who traps her in a dingy apartment, subjecting her to a never-ending stream of clients. As the darkness closes in around her, Lilya's existence becomes a desperate struggle for survival, trapped in a cycle of exploitation and despair.

As the desolate reality of his isolation sets in, Volodya (actor's name) succumbs to despair, his spirit transforming into an ethereal angel. In this new form, he appears before Lilya, lamenting that his afterlife is indeed a paradise, yet he yearns for the fleeting moments of life on earth. On Christmas Day, Volodya takes Lilya on a poignant journey back to their former apartment building, where he bestows upon her the world as a gift, hoping she will come to appreciate its beauty. However, Lilya rejects this offering, recognizing that the world is often cruel and unforgiving.

As desperation grows, Lilya attempts to escape her troubled existence, only to be brutally beaten by her pimp when he forgets to secure the apartment door. In a moment of panic, she flees outside, where the familiar sight of a police car pulls up at a gas station (Witek's treachery having fueled her fear). Lilya dashes through Malmo's streets, eventually halting on a bridge, overcome by exhaustion and defeat. The narrative full circle, Volodya's anguished pleas fall on deaf ears as Lilya, surrendering to the darkness, plunges from the overpass bridge to her tragic end.

The film concludes with two distinct endings. In one version, a mystical reversion takes place, sending Lilya back in time to when she initially considered leaving Russia with Andrei. This time, she declines his offer, and Volodya and Lilya are depicted as potentially leading happier lives. The final scene presents an idyllic vision of Lilya and Volodya, now both angels, enjoying a carefree game of basketball on the rooftop of a tenement building, their spirits finally at peace.
