Pedro Almodóvar Caballero is a celebrated Spanish film director, screenwriter, and author, internationally recognized for his flamboyant and distinct cinematic style. Almodóvar was born in the small rural town of Calzada de Calatrava, Province of Ciudad Real, in Spain, as part of a humble family. His parents hoped he would be a priest, sending him to a religious boarding school in Cáceres. However, film fascinated him more than priesthood. Almodóvar moved to Madrid in 1967 to become a filmmaker. He had several jobs to support himself while he honed his filmmaking skills. He self-taught himself after Francisco Franco, the Spanish dictator, closed the National School of Cinema in Madrid. The cultural scene of Madrid during the 1970s helped shape Almodóvar's distinct cinematic style and narratives.
