Almodóvar moved to Madrid in 1967 to become a filmmaker. He had several jobs to support himself while he honed his filmmaking skills. He self-taught himself after Francisco Franco, the Spanish dictator, closed the National School of Cinema in Madrid. The cultural scene of Madrid during the 1970s helped shape Almodóvar's distinct cinematic style and narratives.
