What is the name of the vessel that Captain Phillips commands?

Plot Summary

On March 28th, 2009, Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks), a devoted husband and father of two, resides in Underhill, Vermont, with his loving wife Andrea (Catherine Keener) and their children Dan (John Magaro) and Mariah (Gigi Raines). As he prepares to take command of the MV Maersk Alabama, a merchant vessel from Port of Salalah in Oman, he’s joined by a seasoned crew consisting of Shane Murphy (Michael Chernus), first officer; Mike Perry (David Warshofsky), chief engineer; Ken Quinn (Corey Johnson), helmsman; John Cronan (Chris Mulkey), William Rios (Mark Holden), Ian Waller (Angus MacInnes), Ethan Stoll (Louis Mahoney), and Andrew (Vincenzo Nicoli).

As Richard Phillips assumes command of the ship, he’s tasked with navigating it through the treacherous waters of the Gulf of Aden to Mombasa, circumventing the notorious Horn of Africa. The MV Maersk Alabama carries a substantial cargo of 2400 tons of commercial goods and 200 tons of food aid, accompanied by 166 tons of freshwater, 250 metric tons of fuel, and an arsenal of preparedness.

With Somali pirates wreaking havoc off the coast of Somalia, Captain Phillips orders his crew to implement strict security measures on board. The vessel is fortified with locked pirate cages and secured doors. His crew carries out drills, honing their skills in preparation for any potential threats.

Meanwhile, a notorious pirate named Muse, under the guidance of a local Somali faction leader, plots an attack from his base in Eyl. Muse’s gang consists of Hufan (Ibrahim Maalim), Assad (Mohamed Ali), Adan Bilal (Barkhad Abdirahman), Walid Elmi (Mahat M. Ali), and Nour Najee. These pirates rely on the natural stimulant Khat to maintain their high energy levels and insatiable desire for danger.

Most vessels traverse the Somalian basin in protected convoys, but Captain Phillips’ MV Maersk Alabama stands out as it travels alone. Muse seizes this opportunity, noticing the vessel’s vulnerability. During a drill, two Somali pirate skiffs give chase, but Captain Phillips successfully outruns them after one abandons its pursuit upon hearing his bluff of requesting immediate military air support and the other succumbs to engine failure due to navigating rough waters created by the ship’s propellers.

The pirates retreat to their mother ship, with Muse fuming at the defeat. He orders a makeshift ladder welded together and the engine repaired before dawn breaks on the next day, preparing for another attempt to capture the prized vessel.

As the Alabama crew anxiously awaits the pirates’ return, a palpable sense of trepidation settles over the vessel. The majority of the sailors lament their lack of financial compensation for the inherent risks involved in navigating the Somalian Basin route. Richard, however, stands firm, recalling the union’s guidelines and vowing to uphold them, even if it means offloading unwilling crew members at Mombasa. But before that can happen, a new wave of uncertainty washes over the ship.

The following day, one of the skiffs returns, carrying four heavily armed pirates led by Abduwali Muse (Barkhad Abdi), their makeshift ladder hastily assembled the night prior. The pirates’ arrival sends the Alabama’s crew into a state of heightened alertness as they prepare for another round of negotiations with their captors.

Despite Captain Phillips’ (he was in the bridge) best efforts to stall, Muse and his cohorts board the Maersk Alabama, swiftly gaining control of the vessel. In a desperate bid to stall, Phillips orders the engine power cut off and instructs his crew to hide in the ship’s engine room. However, Muse remains unfazed, demanding that Richard produce the ship’s crew to carry out his demands.

As tensions escalate, Muse becomes increasingly agitated when he fails to secure the Alabama’s departure, instead finding himself facing a determined crew. Shane manages to cut off the emergency power supply, plunging the lower decks into darkness. With Muse attempting to search the engine room, the crew seizes their chance, overpowering him in a daring act of resistance.

In an attempt to negotiate with the remaining three pirates on the bridge via radio, Richard negotiates a deal that sees the pirates granted access to the ship’s lifeboat and $30,000 from the safe. However, Muse is taken by his comrades, and the pirates force Phillips onto the lifeboat before launching it into the open sea.

In a shocking turn of events, the pirates intend to hold Captain Phillips for ransom, leaving the Alabama crew in a state of despair as they watch their captain’s fate being decided in the dark waters.

As the lifeboat limps towards the shore, the pirate crew’s euphoria begins to dissipate, their supplies dwindling and their connection to the mother ship severed. Amidst this chaos, Richard (actor name) uses his first-aid skills to tend to Bilal’s injured foot, a gesture of humanity in a situation growing increasingly volatile. Muse, driven by orders from his faction leader, remains fixated on capturing Richard, recognizing him as the key to extracting a hefty ransom following their botched ship hijacking. This lucrative endeavour is not without precedent, as Muse previously orchestrated a $6 million heist on a Greek vessel.

Meanwhile, Captain Frank Castellano (Yul Vazquez) of the USS Bainbridge receives orders to prevent the pirates from reaching land at any cost, rendering Richard’s life expendable if there’s even a remote chance of him being rescued. In an attempt to forestall this outcome, Castellano dispatches food and supplies to the lifeboat, accompanied by a request for visual proof of Richard’s existence. Muse obliges, producing Richard and recounting his whereabouts – seat 15 – to the skeptical naval officer.

As tensions escalate, Najee grows increasingly agitated with Muse’s negotiating tactics, demanding a tougher stance. In response, Muse sets an ultimatum: $10 million for Richard’s safe return. The introduction of additional U.S. Navy vessels (the USS Boxer and USS Haliburton) further complicates the situation, prompting Phillips to attempt a direct negotiation with Muse. However, the pirate leader remains resolute, refusing to surrender.

As night falls, Phillips seizes an opportunity to escape, swimming towards the waiting naval ships in the darkness. Though the pirates fire shots at him, he manages to slip back onto the lifeboat, unaware that a SEAL Team has covertly deployed to intervene. Muse’s hold on Najee’s trigger finger is the only thing preventing Richard from becoming the pirates’ next casualty.

The following morning brings a new level of panic when a SEAL helicopter suddenly appears above the lifeboat, pushing the pirates into a state of heightened anxiety. In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, Muse holds Richard at gunpoint and displays him to the hovering aircraft, demanding that it retreat. Unbeknownst to the pirates, three SEAL marksmen have taken up strategic positions, poised to strike simultaneously at each pirate on the lifeboat.

As the standoff reaches a boiling point, Castellano continues to negotiate with Muse, eventually securing agreement for the lifeboat to be taken under tow by the USS Bainbridge. The presence of elder members from Muse’s tribe on board serves as a symbol of the delicate balance between cooperation and conflict in this high-stakes drama.

As tensions simmered onboard the Bainbridge, Muse reluctantly agreed to board the vessel, convinced that he would be reunited with his clan elders to facilitate negotiations for Phillips’s ransom. However, fate had other plans, as Muse soon found himself navigating a treacherous sea of intrigue and deception. On the lifeboat, Najee (Faysal Ahmed), a hot-headed pirate, stumbled upon Phillips scribbling a heartfelt farewell note to his wife. When he attempted to confiscate the precious paper, Phillips launched a fierce counterattack, only to be swiftly subdued and pummeled by Najee’s merciless blows.

As chaos reigned supreme, Najee seized control, ordering his cohorts to bind and blindfold the captive Phillips. The Bainbridge crew, meanwhile, promptly terminated the tow, leaving the lifeboat adrift in the midst of a turbulent sea. Just as Phillips was about to face his ultimate reckoning, three seasoned SEAL marksmen finally obtained their coveted firing solutions, delivering simultaneous precision strikes that left Najee and his pirate cohorts cold and lifeless.

Back on the Bainbridge, Muse’s luck ran out as he was taken into custody and arrested for his role in orchestrating Phillips’s ordeal. The rescued Phillips, still reeling from his harrowing experience, expressed profound gratitude to the rescue team for sparing his life. In a striking juxtaposition, Richard (no actor specified) returned to his family on April 17th, while Muse faced a grim fate, convicted of piracy and serving a lengthy 33-year prison sentence in Indiana’s correctional facilities.
