In a heartfelt tribute to a significant era in American history, this film is inspired by a true incident that occurred in 1968 in Billings, Montana—the hometown of screenwriter T. J. Lynch. Set against the cherished backdrop of a children’s television show, Happy Herb & Froggy Doo, which has enchanted young audiences, the story revolves around its charismatic host, Happy Herb (portrayed by Henry Winkler), and his witty marionette companion, Froggy Doo. The plot thickens with a thrilling mystery when Froggy Doo is stolen and held for ransom.

In the small town, Elliott Plumm (played by Chris J. Kelly) finds himself disenchanted with the show’s allure, deeming it too childish for his evolving tastes. In stark contrast, his five-year-old brother, Rocky, remains an ardent fan of Froggy Doo’s antics. Their father, Mick Plumm (played by William Baldwin), a former boxer, is embroiled in his own battles with addiction and frustration, harboring resentment towards Elliott for what he perceives as a thwarting of his Olympic dreams twelve years earlier. This emotional rift causes their relationship to be steeped in distance and discontent.

Meanwhile, their mother, Roxie Plumm (played by Lisa Guerrero), is the backbone of the family, investing countless hours into providing for them, yet leaving little room for emotional connection or support. The arrival of Haley Dubois (played by Morgan Flynn) and her father, who move into the dilapidated mobile home next door, ignites a spark in Elliott. Haley’s obsession with the Froggy Doo kidnapping serves as the catalyst that rouses Elliott from his emotional stupor, as he begins to fall for her.

Elliott decides to team up with Rocky and Haley to unravel the mystery, hoping that in the process he can win her affection. As the trio dons their detective hats, they encounter a colorful mix of suspects, including the local bully, a quirky store clerk, and Viv (played by Brenda Strong), Happy Herb’s wife. Simultaneously, two clumsy FBI agents, Hardigan (portrayed by Peter Scolari) and Brinkman (Rick Overton), are fiercely on the case, eager to recover Froggy Doo before the amateur sleuths succeed.

Their adventurous journey not only serves as a path to solve the mystery, but it also strengthens the bond between Elliott and Rocky.
