A Royal Night Out Quiz: Test your knowledge about the charming escapades of Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret on V-E Day in 1945.

What event causes Britain to erupt in jubilation at the start of the movie?

Plot Summary

As Britain erupts in jubilation on V-E Day in 1945, archival footage captures Winston Churchill’s triumphant speech amidst the revelry. Meanwhile, at Buckingham Palace, Princesses Margaret and Elizabeth are itching to join the merriment, tired of being confined within the stately “mausoleum” walls. Their pleas fall on deaf ears, however, as Queen Elizabeth reminds them of their royal duties. It’s not until King George is convinced that the girls can provide a unique insight into the thoughts and feelings of ordinary people that he relents, allowing them to venture out with military chaperones in tow.

Margaret bursts forth with excitement, while Elizabeth accompanies her sister with a more measured enthusiasm. As their limousine navigates the throngs of celebrants, they eventually arrive at an indoor soiree, where they’re formally introduced to the upper echelons of society. The guards stationed outside can’t help but be captivated by the beauty surrounding them, providing Margaret with the perfect opportunity to slip away unnoticed. Elizabeth soon realizes her sister is missing and attempts to follow suit, only to spot Margaret on a double-decker bus, which she promptly boards.

Elizabeth, meanwhile, finds herself seated beside Jack, a dashing pilot who flew sorties over Germany during the war. Though Jack divulges his information at a leisurely pace, Elizabeth remains oblivious to his identity, introducing herself as Lizzie and offering few details about her own circumstances. As they near their destination, Trafalgar Square, Elizabeth spots Margaret attempting to convey directions through sign language, which other passengers quickly decipher.

With no cash on hand to pay for her fare, Elizabeth gratefully accepts Jack’s offer to cover the cost. When she decides it’s time to disembark, Jack assists her once more, and they find themselves standing together in the midst of the celebration. Lost in the crowd, Elizabeth seeks guidance from Jack as she endeavors to locate her wayward sister. A broken heel prompts Jack to lend his repair skills, solidifying their budding connection as they navigate the chaos of V-E Day.

As Elizabeth (actress name) and Jack stroll into a local pub, they’re treated to an impassioned speech from King George, his stuttering drawing attention to the gravity of the situation. Jack’s irreverence sparks a heated debate, culminating in his ejection by the authorities. Despite her initial reservations, Elizabeth remains by Jack’s side, gently rebuking him for his forthrightness. As they share their stories - with Jack recounting the devastating loss of a friend and his subsequent disillusionment with the war effort - it becomes clear that Elizabeth, too, has served her country in ways that go beyond baking cookies like her mother before her.

Meanwhile, Margaret finds herself in unfamiliar territory when she meets Raymond (actor name), whose single-minded focus leaves her uneasy. A visit to an establishment catering to military personnel’s vices leads to a compromising situation - Margaret is slipped a mysterious pink drink, rendering her disoriented. Fortunately, she regains her bearings at an office where she reveals her true identity and receives aid from the men there. Escorted by the establishment’s employees, Margaret finds temporary sanctuary.

As Elizabeth searches for Margaret, thinking she knows the route her friend might have taken, Jack has abandoned her, leaving her to navigate a foreboding landscape devoid of friendly faces - or safety. It is Jack who reappears, rescuing Elizabeth from the clutches of potential harm.

Back at the palace, the soldiers entrusted with guarding the princesses are rocked by the devastating news. One hapless guard finds himself caught in a compromising situation, forced to hastily don attire as he and his partner scramble to locate the missing royals.

Elizabeth and Jack return to the palace, only to find a crowd gathered to hear King George’s address. Jack’s apathy is palpable, while Elizabeth remains steadfast, still grappling with her sister’s disappearance. Margaret, meanwhile, remains unaccounted for, her whereabouts unknown.

As night falls, the soldiers are tasked with reporting to their commanding officer but ultimately opt to indulge in one last night of freedom rather than face the consequences of their failure to protect the princesses. King George, his anxiety mounting as he addresses the crowd outside, is beset by concerns not only for his daughters’ safety but also for the people’s ability to cope with the uncertain future that lies ahead.

As the night wears on, Elizabeth and her companions find themselves bound for Chelsea, but Jack’s ingenuity proves the key to their transportation - a trusty tugboat that will ensure they avoid the taxi queues. Meanwhile, Margaret has finally found herself swept up in the thrill of the Lindy Hop, her movements fluid and carefree as she dances with the swing band. It’s here that Elizabeth chances upon her sister, only to discover that the soldiers assigned to guard them have also arrived on the scene. Jack, it seems, is being pursued by those same soldiers, a development he attributes to his own confession of desertion. As the situation begins to spiral out of control, Elizabeth’s quick thinking proves the turning point, as she reveals her true identity and earns the respect that follows.

With tensions eased, Jack finally opens up about his own story, confessing a deep-seated need to return to his mother’s side - a desire that is tempered only by the knowledge that he will face serious consequences if he fails to report back to base by 8:00. With time ticking away, Elizabeth accompanies Jack on an emotional visit to his childhood home, where she treats them both as equals and forgoes any pretensions of superiority.

As the morning light begins to creep over the horizon, Elizabeth returns Jack to the palace, where King George and Queen Elizabeth may not approve of their guest, but Elizabeth’s persuasive powers prove more than a match for their reservations. Margaret, meanwhile, has been spirited away by the soldiers, who deposit her at her parents’ doorstep in a state of apparent intoxication - a ruse that proves short-lived as she eventually falls into a deep sleep.

The following morning brings a visit from Jack to Elizabeth’s mother, where he is greeted with warmth and understanding. As they sit down to breakfast together, King George learns that Jack and Elizabeth were among the audience for his speech in a local pub - an experience he assumes would have been met with apathy. Yet Jack’s response is telling, as he assures the king that those present were deeply moved by his words - a sentiment that earns him the appreciation of the royal couple.

As the time draws to a close, Jack finds himself facing a daunting deadline - just 30 minutes remain before he must return to base. Elizabeth, however, has a solution at her fingertips, drawing upon her own driving experience - one she’s had since the tender age of 11. As they speed towards their destination, Elizabeth reveals a bad girl side that has been simmering beneath the surface all along, pushing the pedal to the metal as they narrowly beat the clock.
