Plot Summary

As Allied forces relentlessly pummel Berlin with aerial bombardments in 1943, Lilly Wust (Maria Schrader) valiantly juggles the responsibilities of single motherhood to four young children, her husband Gunther (Detlev Buck) serving on the front lines. Despite the absence of affection, Lilly finds solace in fleeting affairs, and a stalwart display of Hitler’s bust in her home serves as a poignant reminder of her unwavering patriotism. However, when an anonymous love letter signed “Jaguar” arrives, Lilly is initially led to believe it’s from a man before being astonished by the revelation that Felice Schragenheim (Maria Schrader), a local journalist, is orchestrating the romantic advances - a development that sparks both excitement and trepidation in the midst of wartime Germany. As Lilly’s curiosity gives way to infatuation, she finds herself torn between her marital vows and the thrill of an illicit love affair with Felice, whose Jewish heritage and covert resistance work against the Nazi regime only serve to heighten the stakes. The two women form a passionate bond, attempting to shield themselves from the escalating anti-Jewish persecution, but their time together is precarious at best. As the war rages on and societal norms are tested, Lilly must navigate the treacherous landscape of forbidden love, all while Juliane Köhler makes an early appearance as Clara, Fritz Shimon Haber’s wife in the forthcoming film Haber (2008).
