Plot Summary

John “Zibs” Zbikowski, a small-town bookie struggling to make ends meet, has hit rock bottom after abandoning a promising baseball career to care for his ailing father Bob. The weight of Bob’s tragic past, marred by a fatal DUI that left his life in shambles, hangs heavy on Zibs’ shoulders. Inheriting his father’s sportsbook, Zibs finds himself drowning in debt, resorting to unscrupulous methods to collect from the locals - often at their expense. A chance encounter with his high school ex-girlfriend Debbie leads to a one-night stand, but it’s Zibs’ babysitting duties the next day that introduce him to her 12-year-old son Brian. Despite initial reluctance, Zibs agrees to attend Brian’s baseball game and is struck by the potential for profit in betting on local Youth League games.

As Zibs delves deeper into this new venture, his scheme proves lucrative, but it also corrupts the coaches and parents, fueling a toxic atmosphere at games. Spending more time with Brian, Zibs teaches him to pitch and introduces him to the world of drinking, gambling, and fighting - even enlisting his help in home robberies. Debbie’s concerns about Zibs’ influence on her son grow, while Zibs becomes increasingly entrenched in his day job as a sheet rock installer, alienating his friend Scotty in the process. Meanwhile, Matt “Smitty” Smith, the Little League commissioner running for public office, catches wind of Zibs’ operation and attempts to blackmail him into shutting it down.

Armed with the knowledge that Smitty is having an affair with Debbie, Zibs leverages this information to keep him quiet. Brian, however, becomes disillusioned with Zibs’ scheme as he witnesses the increasingly hostile behavior of the Youth League parents. In a bold move, Brian deliberately throws a crucial game, nearly sparking a riot on the field. Smitty cancels the rest of the season, and Zibs’ clients turn on him. A falling out between Zibs and Brian leads to Brian’s hospitalization after he breaks into his estranged father Hooper’s house. Zibs seeks revenge against Hooper but is talked down by Bob, who reveals that his “DUI” was actually a premeditated murder committed while his wife was involved with another man.

As Zibs reconciles with Brian and abandons the Youth League sports book, he acknowledges that his behavior may not change without further intervention. With his father’s revelation still fresh in his mind, Zibs is faced with the difficult task of reevaluating his life choices and making amends for past wrongs.
