Plot Summary

In a cozy fir tree abode, three chipmunk companions - Alvin, Simon, and Theodore - find themselves alone, having been left to fend for themselves by their parents. However, their peaceful existence is disrupted when the tree is felled and transported to Los Angeles, where it becomes a prized Christmas tree for JETT Records. Meanwhile, struggling songwriter Dave Seville (played by () ) is reeling from his latest demo being rejected by his former college roommate-turned-executive Ian Hawke, who brutally suggests that Dave hang up his pen. As fate would have it, the Chipmunks stumble upon a basket of muffins pilfered by Dave and follow him back to his home.

Initially, Dave is oblivious to the chipmunk trio’s presence in his residence, but after discovering them, he tries to evict them. However, their enchanting harmonies on “Only You (And You Alone)” and “Funkytown” leave him mesmerized, leading him to propose a deal: the Chipmunks would sing songs written by Dave in exchange for sustenance and shelter. As the night wears on, Dave becomes inspired by the Chipmunks’ gentle humming in their sleep, crafting a song for them - “Christmas Don’t Be Late”. The next day, with the Chipmunks warming up to his tune, Dave presents them to Ian, only to be met with stage fright and embarrassment. The day takes a turn for the worse as Dave is fired from his advertising job due to the Chipmunks’ creative liberties taken on his presentation boards.

As the dust settles, Dave hosts an evening dinner with Claire, his former flame, but things become increasingly awkward when Alvin attempts to create a romantic ambiance, leaving Claire feeling uncomfortable and ultimately departing. In an act of contrition, the Chipmunks pay Ian a visit at his lavish mansion, where they regale him with their rendition of “Christmas Don’t Be Late”, securing a record deal and restoring Dave’s job as JETT’s songwriter.

As the Chipmunks’ international stardom soars, Dave grows concerned about their well-being in the spotlight. However, Ian convinces them that Dave is stifling their success, leading to a series of misunderstandings and ultimately, the Chipmunks decide to leave Dave behind and join Ian on his nationwide tour. As they embark on this exhausting journey, Ian exploits their innocence by overworking them mercilessly. When Ian’s plan to take the Chipmunks on a twelve-month global tour is revealed on the news, Dave decides to infiltrate their concert at the Orpheum Theatre to stage an intervention and rescue his furry friends from the clutches of Ian’s relentless ambition.

As the tour’s curtain call approaches, a wise veterinarian reveals to Ian that the harmonious Chipmunks’ voices have been ravaged by exhaustion, necessitating a prolonged respite. Undeterred by the prospect of canceling the concert and facing refund requests, Ian implores the trio to resort to lip-syncing as a means of salvaging the performance. However, Dave Seaver (David Seaver) secretly infiltrates the event with Claire’s assistance; upon hearing his father’s whispers, the Chipmunks become privy to Ian’s deception and concoct a plan to disrupt the show by unleashing chaos on stage. As security intervenes to apprehend Dave, Ian seizes the opportunity to capture the Chipmunks, imprisoning them in a cage and preparing to take them on their globe-trotting adventure. Dave makes a heartfelt plea to Ian, arguing that the Chipmunks require a genuine life experience, but Ian remains steadfast in his resolve, prompting Dave to make a daring escape in his limousine while hotly pursued by Ian. When Ian finally loses sight of Dave, the Chipmunks unexpectedly materialize in his vehicle, facilitating a poignant reconciliation between father and furry friends. However, Ian’s discovery of their escape comes at a steep cost, as he finds himself not only without his career but also his fortune, leaving him to confront the wreckage of his own making.
